Demons win by keeping it simple

Nyah put on a display of economic bowling as they defeated Wandella for the second time in two weeks.

Being played at the neutral venue of Swan Hill Showgrounds, Wandella elected to bat in the first innings and Nyah set about work.

Bowling to a field with a single fielder to the right of mid-on, the Demons’ bowlers stuck to a simple plan and bogged down their opponents.

Joel Walsh and Max Thompson were full of venom early, with some extra zip added by the Showgrounds pitch.

It was Walsh who claimed first-blood, as Samuel Copland was caught for seven and just three balls later, Thompson joined the party.

When a single brought fresh batsman Luke Murray to the strike, Thompson trapped him in front of the stumps and send him back to the rooms on his first ball faced.

Brodey Farley soon followed for 10, leaving Peter Moore and Kaine O’Connell to steady the ship, the pair adding 27 between them before Moore was dismissed for 13.

With scoring against Nyah’s bowling attack getting harder throughout the day, pressure continued to build on the Bombers’ bats.

When Cooper Andrews dismissed Kaine O’Connell for 28 off his 48 balls, the Bombers sat at 6/66, but it was the late innings of Daniel Higgs who pushed Wandella over the 100 mark.

Higgs added a quick 23 runs which included four boundaries but was soon the second victim of Andrews, who finished with 2/14 off his three overs.

Each Nyah District bowler bowled well to their fields, as Joel Walsh finished with 3/30, Max Thompson 3/26 and skipper Ben Shadbolt taking 1/27, to dismiss Wandella for 104.

Nyah replicated their patient line and length with the ball, with a smart second-innings chase.

As the sun continued to blare down, openers Charlie Boulton and Dean Harrop looked to take the sting out of a dangerous Bombers outfit.

The pair soaked up ten overs of pressure from Peter Moore and Ethan McKnight, before Harrop was caught by Luke Murray off the bowling of Moore for 15.

Boulton fell five runs later for 15, leaving Shane Fleming and Joel Walsh to continue the chase at 2/30.

The experience of Fleming fit the number three role perfectly, as he accumulated runs alongside Walsh’s free flowing bat.

The pair managed to add another 29 runs, before Walsh was caught off the bowling of Wandella skipper Ryan Barnes, while Peter Moore dismissed Max Thompson for four.

Fleming was joined in the middle by Justin Toomey, and the two chased down the last 36 runs of the match for a six-wicket win.

Toomey’s unbeaten innings of 23 contained four fours, while Fleming top scored with 25 not out.
