St Mary McKillop College’s Student Expo gets kids on track

DECIDING on subjects to take during your final years of high school can sometimes be a daunting feat, but St Mary MacKillop College helped to alleviate that pressure for their students by holding a subject expo during the week.

Subject Expo allowed students and parents to come and look at different subject displays that they can choose from for next year.

“It sounds really early doing it in May for next year, but there is a lot of planning and process that has to happen between finding out what they would like to do, to actually getting a timetable put together for next year,” St Mary MacKillop College Principal, Michelle Haeusler said.

Held in the school’s Jubilee Centre on Wednesday night, students and their parents were able to see all the subjects that are available to them, as well as asking the subject teachers questions to get all the information they can to help them in their choices.

“So many kids don’t know what they want to do anymore, so it’s really good for them to get a bit of an idea of what subjects are out there, what is in them, what might interest them, and all those sorts of things,” Ms Haeusler said.

“We had such a huge number of people come through in 2021, which showed us that the parents and students still value being able to talk to people about their futures and their subjects, and get all the information they can to make wise choices.”

Ms Haeusler said it is a really valuable opportunity for those that come along.

“Parents don’t get much of an opportunity in secondary school to see what goes on,” Ms Haeusler said.

“So it’s a really wonderful chance for parents to come into the school and actually see what the students are presenting and working on.”

This week was also Catholic Education Week in the Ballarat Diocese, with the occasion to be celebrated with an interschool mass held at St Mary’s Primary School Swan Hill, and includes St Mary’s Primary School Sea Lake as well as St Mary MacKillop College.

Ms Haeusler said it is a “huge feat” getting all the schools together for the mass.

“It’s a real celebration of why our schools exist and why we love the place where we live, work and learn,” Ms Haeusler said.

Enrolments are now open for 2023. If you would like to find out more about St Mary MacKillop College or book a tour, contact the school on 5032 9771.
