Keeping trainee teachers in local communities

MAKING a difference is something that Marysia Dunn has always wanted to do and will now have the chance to do as a trainee teacher in Balranald.

Ms Dunn’s application to study a Bachelor of Education (Primary) through the Catholic Education Wilcannia-Forbes (CEWF) Teaching Schools Hub was recently successful.

Currently the school chaplain at Balranald Central School, Ms Dun will continue to work part-time in her role while also studying full-time to complete her teaching degree through the CEWF Teaching Hub.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the phone call to say my application has been successful,” Ms Dunn said.

“I am so excited to embark on this journey.”

CEWF Teaching Schools Hub manager Vicki Cavallaro said the hub was an exciting new initiative in the Wilcannia-Forbes Diocese that provides a practical, hands-on way for those wanting to become primary school teachers to gain their qualifications without having to leave their local community.

“In these days of chronic teacher shortages, the Alphacrusis Teaching School Hub Model is a proven model that allows students to train from the bush, for the bush,” Ms Cavallaro said.

Placements into the program are by competitive entry, with applicants required to complete a written application and interview panel.

“Offers are dependent on acceptance into an online Bachelor of Education (primary) course with Alphacrusis University College, and a desire to work in Catholic Education schools upon completion of the degree,” Ms Cavallaro said.

Part of Ms Dunn’s journey will include attending training sessions with the hub to learn about the practical day to day aspects of teaching in a primary school setting at St Joseph’s Parish School in Balranald.

“I am delighted to welcome Marysia to the class of 2022,” Ms Cavallaro said.

“She brings a wealth of knowledge to the hub in so many ways – her relationships within the local community, at Balranald Central School and in St Joseph’s give her invaluable experience which she will be able to put towards her study and her future as an educator.”

Teacher at St Joseph’s Parish School, Julie McNab has been appointed as Ms Dunn’s mentor teacher, having more than six years of teaching experience and a wealth of knowledge behind her.

“Marysia will be a valuable member of our St Joseph’s Parish School. She has been involved in our school community as a parent and representative on our P&F,” Ms McNab said.

“I think she will make a wonderful teacher and I look forward to assisting her in any way I can so she can achieve her goal.”
