Positive and thriving

BUILDING positive relationships is a fundamental aspect of life at St Mary’s.

The school is known for its strong partnerships with families and for the positive relationships built between families and the school.

“There is such a strong sense of hospitality and welcome at St Mary’s, and it’s often the first thing people comment on when they walk into the school – they feel like they are connected to a big family,” principal Kate Quin said.

It’s this sense of community and belonging which makes St Mary’s more than a school – it’s a thriving educational community.

Ms Quin said the key to the school’s success was relationships.

“Relationships between children and each other, between staff and students, and of course our relationships with families – it’s all about good relationships,” she said.

These partnerships start with families well before the first day of school, with many programs and opportunities for families to connect and engage within the school community.

The school’s extensive transition program ensures Prep students are well supported and equipped with the skills they need to ensure a smooth transition into school life.

The school’s Flying Start school familiarisation program and the Fly Into Foundation program enable a seamless transition.

“By the time students start the following year, they already feel a part of the school and it certainly reduces any little worries they might have,” Ms Quin said.

Committed to ensuring each and every child thrives at St Mary’s, relationships are continually nurtured.

“Getting to know each child as a person and learner is very important,” Ms Quin said.

The school’s annual welcome picnic, open days and learning walks also encourage family involvement within the school.

“At St Mary’s we recognise that parents play a vital role in the education of their children and we are always looking for ways to continue to work together to achieve the best for our students,” Ms Quin said.

“We really want our parents to be partners in their children’s education so by coming in and seeing what goes on in real-time in our classrooms, helps this partnership to flourish.”
