SCHOOL camps are where students create some of their fondest memories, and Nyah District Primary School’s camps, excursions and incursions program gives students plenty of opportunities to do just that.
Nyah District Primary School principal Luke Dalton said the school endeavours to offer their student a wide range of experiences through the program.
“It gives the children a few more experiences which they can share with their friends, and we find that those experiences are really good to enhance their learning in so many different ways – we can use that as topics to write about, learn about geography and historical events that we see along the way, and so many other opportunities,” he said.
“It’s a really good tie-in with so many elements of the curriculum.”
Each year, the Year 5 and 6 students go to Melbourne for camp to have a real taste of the city, while the Year 3 and 4 students go on a two-night, three day camp each year, heading to the Grampians this year.
The school also runs a local sleepover program for their Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students, visiting venues around town such as the Pental Island Caravan Park and the Pioneer Settlement.
Mr Dalton believes there are many benefits that come from their camp and excursion program.
“The kids get to collaborate with their peers, and even just taking responsibility for setting the table and helping organise meals, all those kinds of activities that really can develop so many different skills,” Mr Dalton said.
“It is not just the academic skills that we focus on in the camp program – they get a lot of social benefits as well.”
Nyah District also has a fantastic incursion program, bringing people and programs into the school to teach and entertain their students.
“We find that the interaction that the kids get when people visit the school is always very positive,” Mr Dalton said.
