Big year for our smallest citizens

THIS week is big for many students in their academic life. For some it is a new beginning at a new school, whether they are transitioning into high school, changing schools or new to the community.

For the foundation students in the region it marks the beginning of what could be a more than 20-year journey.

Making their way classes for the first time, there was a full range of emotions and reactions on Tuesday morning from nervousness to excitement.

St Mary’s Primary School principal Kate Quinn said it had been one of the most settled beginnings to the school year with COVID is behind us.

“We have already had a lovely start to our year already as we settle into our brand new buildings that were opened recently,” Ms Quinn said.

“The foundation children settled in beautifully on Tuesday and then had a little rest on Wednesday, as do all the children in the district, and now they are back with sparkly eyes to do it all over again.

“A student’s first year at school is a very important year, so as well as all those social aspects of learning the routines and structures of school there is a big emphasis on them learning to read and write.

“It is very important to get those early skills started.”
