Quest for excellence

IT’S been a busy start to the year for Swan Hill College, with students engaged in a range of specialty programs and initiatives designed to enhance learning and support wellbeing.

Acting principal De Rosewarne said the school took great pride in its breadth of curriculum and pathway options, which allowed every child to achieve excellence in their chosen field.

However she said students were encouraged to shine beyond the classroom.

“We also get to help students develop themselves through the extracurricular programs we run, which help to instil our values of respect, responsibility, belonging and high expectations,” Ms Rosewarne said.

The academic development of students from Year 10 to Year 12 is one of the priorities of the senior sub school.

“Whether studying their VCE or VCE-VM certificate, students are equipped with the skills that will help them prepare for their assessment tasks and exams, as well as life after school,” Ms Rosewarne said.

The implementation of the school’s Responsibility Room and Homework Program ensures students are able to gain access to additional resources and support, with staff volunteering their time to take part in these programs.

“The Responsibility Room is a great way for students to meet up with their teachers outside class time, and is just one of the ways they are supported,” Ms Rosewarne said.

The college continues to build strong community partnerships and the school’s breakfast program, sponsored by Broad Realty, is just one example of local businesses contributing to the school environment.

Each Friday student volunteers dedicate their time to the program, providing free toasted sandwiches, drinks and other essentials to more than 150 students who take part.

The college encourages students to pursue their interests through a range of extracurricular activities, designed to enhance leadership and teamwork skills.

From competitive sports to creative arts and environmental programs, there is something for everyone.

Ms Rosewarne said students had begun rehearsals for their upcoming production of Matilda Jr, which will go on stage in August.

A dedicated cast of students from Years 7 to 12 will help bring the production to fruition, while showcasing their skills.

“This year there’s a large number of people who can’t wait to get involved in the backstage and hands-on part of a production,” Ms Rosewarne said.

“With Harrison Hall getting a new sound and lighting system, the students are super excited about learning the technical side of theatre.”

The school’s Green Team continues to embed a respectful culture of minimising waste and building on sustainable practices.

“We continue to improve on biodiversity, while reducing energy and water wastage,” Ms Rosewarne said.

“We run workshops on a regular basis to engage students and staff with sustainable practices, while educating them.”
