Together we learn

NYAH District Primary School is proud of its motto Together We Learn, but it’s not just the students that are included in that philosophy.

Principal Luke Dalton said staff, parents and the support staff team, along with the broader community, are considered learners.

The school has a comprehensive curriculum and a strong focus on numeracy, literacy and wellbeing.

“We were part of the Mental Health in Primary Schools pilot program,” Mr Dalton said.

“That program was successful and has now been rolled out to all schools across the state, and we feel we have had that extra time to really embrace it.

“We will continue to set up supports and upskilling our school community to ensure wellbeing remains at the forefront.”

The school is proud of its small class sizes and dedicated team of staff who have remained with the school for a number of years.

Mr Dalton said that commitment, along with great support staff in every classroom, is what makes the school successful.

Nyah District Primary is also focused on providing a strong transition process to kindergarten children making the move into primary school.

“We will begin running our preparing for Prep program in Term 2 and will be reaching out to the kindergarten in Nyah to form connections well ahead of the children starting in 2025,” he said.

“Our transition program includes our staff visiting the kindergarten to spend time with the children in their own environment.

“It also includes our students paying a visit, sharing stories with the kinder children and playing games together.

“Later, the kinder children then pay our school a visit, and our students and staff will again interact with them to ensure they feel welcomed and supported.”

The school prides itself on its inclusive nature and all newcomers are made to feel welcome.

“Our students are very accepting of other people coming into our community and the older grades are buddied up with a Prep student to aid in a seamless transition,” Mr Dalton said.

“We are a positive-behaviour school and the whole school community understands what is acceptable and appropriate behaviour.

“We offer a range of specialist subjects which the students really enjoy and would welcome anyone to come along and take a tour of our wonderful school.”
