As education week comes to an end, Nyah District Primary School dedicated this year’s theme to STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.
STEM is a weekly specialist subject at the school, which aims to teach students about the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths in the classroom and everyday life.
Throughout the week, students were able to participate in various activities highlighting STEM.
Principal of Nyah District Primary School, Luke Dalton, said students worked in groups to collaborate, design, trial and then construct their ideas.
“Lots of interesting attempts were made with a few successes happening,” Mr Dalton said.
“Grade 3 and 4 children were given a challenge to move a ping-pong ball from one couch to the other over a gap of over 50cm.
“In grade 5 and 6, the students were given the chance to create their own vehicle using a range of construction sets.
“They were required to work within a group and create the model using a range of simple tools and connection methods. There was lots of great teamwork and respect happening as well as some resilience when dealing with construction issues.”
With 53 students attending the school, Mr Dalton emphasised that every student gets the attention and education they need to thrive.
“As a community school, we really prioritise learning and providing a quality education for all,” he said.
“It’s what we aim to do at our school everyday.”
Mr Dalton said he feels proud of the school’s consistent involvement within the community.
“We’re the hub of the town,” he said. “We have lots of involvement with the community. We recently ran our cross country event and had the entire families involved in one way or another. We also had families come to school for Mother’s Day to celebrate all the special women in the community.
“We’re also really engaged with the local Men’s Shed. Every year we work with them and do projects and use their fantastic local resources.”
