Taking step on career ladder with work experience placements

STUDENTS at St Mary MacKillop College have had a look at potential careers.

The first cohort of Year 10 students completed their work experience placements last week.

The placements provided an opportunity for students to explore areas of interest, as they prepare to enter their senior years of schooling.

The school recognises there’s no one size fits all approach when it comes to achieving a fulfilling career.

Pathways co-ordinator Sally Looney said the school offered a number of career-orientated programs, designed to assist with the transition process.

With so many choices and career pathways available, Mrs Looney said it was important to “start conversations early on”.

She encouraged students to hone in on their interests, while remaining flexible and open-minded.

“It’s a time to explore different careers,” Mrs Looney said.

The school regularly participates in industry visits to various workplaces within Swan Hill, and in the past have visited the police station, accounting firms, hospital and agricultural and trade businesses.

“Pathways education provides young people with the tools they need to make informed career decisions and transitions from secondary school and throughout their lives,” Mrs Looney said.

“Students are prepared for a variety of pathways, including further training through tertiary education, employment, apprenticeships and traineeships.”

Subject choices can influence career pathways, and with this in mind, the College is set to host an Open Day and Subject Selection Expo on May 22.

Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning, Nathan Lane said the event would provide tours of the school, and information sessions.

“We welcome students and their parents to find out more about St Mary MacKillop College,” Mr Lane said.

“It’s a great opportunity for parents and students to find out about our subject offerings, with teachers available to answer any questions.”

The school offers a variety of subjects at VCE level, including the VCE Vocational Major and VET subjects.
