School run adds colour

BEVERFORD District Primary School invites the wider Swan Hill district to join a colour run, on Sunday, October 20, from noon.

The event is designed to extend the strong connection the school has with Beverford to the rest of the region through fun and fitness.

Principal Phillip Cox says that the colour run is an opportunity to show off the grounds and celebrate the 600-metre track that goes around the school.

“We love our fitness track, which our kids walk and jog around every morning when they arrive for school,” he said.

“It’s great for health and fitness as well as the social aspect, as they walk and chat with each other and with teachers, and it strengthens the connected environment at the school.”

The colour run event will include live music from Swan Hill local Bruce Myers, with a barbecue and non-alcoholic drinks available as well.

The first 100 people to register will receive a pair of sunglasses and a sweatband to wear as they take on the colour run.

Attendees are encouraged to come wearing a white shirt to allow the full effect of the coloured slime and powders.

The event was planned in partnership with Bigger Better Beverford, which facilitated sponsorship and a grant from Swan Hill Rural City Council to make the day possible.

Mr Cox is dedicated to promoting the quality of education provided at small rural and regional schools.

“If anything, it’s a better education in a small school; we have skilled educators, the average class size is 10, and students have ready access to one-on-one interactions with teachers,” he said.

“We strive for an inclusive environment that sets our students up for the future.”

Beverford District Primary School boasts a staff of specialist educators in science, performing arts, Auslan and visual arts, as well as a qualified health and fitness teacher who takes physical education.

“Our specialist program would match the best that I’ve seen in the schools that I’ve worked at,” Mr Cox said.

The Mobile Area Resource Centre, a mobile library, visits on Wednesdays to serve students and allow them to borrow different types of books, alongside a literacy-based activity to immerse the students in literature.

Through the comprehensive dance, drama and music program, students are about to start working on the main performance scheduled for the end of the year, which is popular with students of all levels.

Students are also excited for the Swan Hill District Show, as many have entered their artwork and writing pieces to be judged among their district peers.

“We’re very proud of their entries, and students are usually very successful,” Mr Cox said.

Outside of show season, students’ artwork decorates the school and regularly garners compliments from visitors.

The structure of the school day – two hours of English and an hour of arithmetic in the morning, and the rest of the day for the rest of the subjects – allows for all of the students’ interests.

“They’re all engaged and we’re providing a well rounded education that creates a whole person,” Mr Cox said.

“For our senior kids, this schedule is preparing them for the world before them, and the subjects and curriculum they’ll have at Swan Hill College.”

Register for the colour run by calling Beverford District Primary School on 5037 6622, or through the school’s website or Facebook page.
