NYAH District Primary School gets the whole community involved in providing enjoyable and engaging learning opportunities for students.
Programs and activities are designed to have students apply practical skills in a fun setting.
“The many opportunities we give our students to enjoy themselves while getting valuable learning add immensely to their education, and we take great pride in that,” principal Luke Dalton said.
“This well rounded approach creates a positive flow-on effect in their friendships and other schoolwork, as they write recounts, narratives and informative fiction drawing inspiration from their experiences at school.”
Term 3 was packed with visitors, athletics and milestones.
Nyah District Primary students competed in the small schools athletics with Lake Boga, Woorinen District, Beverford and Ultima primary schools for the first time, getting an opportunity to put their training into action.
Interschool sports competitions have the added benefit of building social connections throughout the region.
The school held its own Olympics to build excitement and support for the Australian athletes competing in Paris, as well as encouraging hands-on applications of maths.
Students were responsible for measuring distances thrown in discus and shotput and timing sprinters, with emphasis put on the importance of accurate readings in nail-biting finishes between athletes.
Families on the sidelines cheered on all students during events, building the school’s community spirit.
The school hosted visitors who taught students critical life skills, with a responsible ownership of pets incursion and participation in the Murray Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network’s Mental Emotional Spiritual Health support group.
Students had fun with the dogs present in the session while they learned about caring for animals and safety around new dogs.
MMLLEN representatives Fiona and Jan took Year 5 and 6 students through fun games and activities to teach them critical skills they need to learn, work and get along with other throughout their lives.
Mr Dalton attributes the success of the many programs and events Nyah District Primary School runs to the support of the teachers, families and community.
“I recognise the amazing work of our staff in organisation and on-the-day support of our events,” he said.
“They go above and beyond, are very hands on, and they’re the reason education becomes enjoyable – the smiles on staffs’ faces are contagious.
“Families are always supporting us, assisting us and being present, which is really important for creating that community environment that makes enjoyable learning possible.”
