Rotary Ag program gets big tick

ST MARY McKillop student Indi O’Brien spent her holidays learning about the agriculture industry at Longerenong College in Horsham as part of the Defying the Drift program.

Indi was sponsored by the Swan Hill Sunrise Rotary Club to attend the program, which she recommends to other students.

Over the three-day program, she had the opportunity to visit a range of different farms, from broad acre to flower farming, as well as learn about all the upcoming technology in the agricultural sector.

“Whether you’re into the agricultural sector or not, it’s an incredible experience and opportunity to boost your confidence, build meaningful relationships and create lasting connections,” she said.

“This program helped me develop life skills, resilience and leadership, having focused on mentoring, teamwork and positive decision-making.

“It’s especially beneficial for those in rural or farming communities.”

Swan Hill Sunrise Rotary Club president Kayla Adams said Rotary supported young people getting involved in the agricultural industry.

“The average age of farmers is approaching 60 years, so young people interested in farming are worth their weight in gold,” she said.
