Isaac Durie dux of Tyrrell

TYRRELL College graduate Isaac Durie has been named this year’s dux.

Isaac said the accolade came as a surprise.

He added that he had taken each day as it came, and tried not to get bogged down in the hype of Year 12 and end of year results.

“I just tried to stick to it and get it done,” he said.

“It wasn’t worth stressing about and was not really as bad as it was made out to be.”

Isaac studied five VCE subjects which included English, maths, biology, agriculture/horticulture studies and PE.

The sporting enthusiast said PE was his favourite subject.

He was a house captain, and age champion for both swimming and cross country.

He also played football and cricket for his local clubs, and was a lifeguard at the pool during summer.

Juggling his studies and sporting commitments throughout the year was no mean feat for the graduate, who also worked at the local supermarket.

Looking towards the future, Isaac hopes to combine his passion for sport with his future career and has applied to study exercise sports science at university.

“It was a standout university course when I was looking for something to study,” Isaac said, noting he had attended a university open day and was excited by the prospect of moving to a larger city.

Tyrrell College careers and pathways co-ordinator Tarsh Hickey said the school was really proud of its 2024 cohort, with seven graduates completing their VCE.

She said all students had worked hard throughout the year and had achieved results which would ensure they could continue down the path of their chosen career, which included nursing, vet nursing and careers within the Australian Defence Force.

Ms Hickey said some students had already began full-time employment, while others were awaiting university and TAFE offers.
