Fun activities for children over school holidays

THE Swan Hill Regional Library and the Regional Gallery are teaming up to provide fun and engaging activities for children throughout the school holidays.

Making the most of their temporary residency in the library, the gallery has $5 art and craft workshops with local artist Robyn Patterson for primary school-aged children.

Children can try carving and shaping a small bird sculpture to take home on Tuesday, January 7.

The next session will have children cutting and pasting an echidna collage on Thursday, January 9.

Children can experiment with yarn, embroidery thread and colourful felts to create a bush flower pompom to decorate their school bag or keychain on Tuesday, January 14.

In the last session, children can paint their favourite zoo animals in acrylic paints on a canvas on Thursday, January 16.

All gallery sessions will be at 10:30-11:30am.

The library will have sessions throughout the holidays from January 2 to 24, with the creating station and search and find, operating while the library is open.

Minecraft Mondays are on Monday, January 6, 13 and 20 for afternoons of 3D blocking fun, from 1-4pm.

Wednesday afternoons are for Lego and loom bands from 2-4pm, with challenges and free-form creativity open to participants.

Bunnings Swan Hill will provide hands-on activities for children at 2-3pm each Friday, for them to use their imaginations and get creative.

The first session is for children aged 2-5 to create a unique pet rock, with all materials supplied, at 2-3pm, Friday, January 10.

The Bunnings team will be back on Friday, January 17 to guide children aged 7-and-up through making a unique wooden 3D flying bird.

Their last session on Friday, January 24 will have children aged 5-and-up create a picture using coloured sand, sticky paper and their imagination.

Children aged 8-and-up can design and construct miniature rollercoasters, buildings and other structures with blocks, cardboard and kits based on storybooks at the STEM engineering session at 10:30am-12pm on Thursday, 12pm.

To book holiday activities call the library on 5036 2480.

More information is available on the library’s Facebook page and newsletter at library.swanhill.vic.gov.au.

THE LIBRARY will close for a short time over Christmas and New Year, returning early 2025.

Robinvale Library will close at 6pm on Monday, December 23and re-open at 2pm on Monday, January 6.

Patrons are welcome to borrow extra items so you have plenty to read during the holiday period.

No items will be due for return during the time the library is closed.

THE library outreach program will come to three towns around the region in January, for some fun in the sun and access to the mobile library.

All children must be actively supervised by an adult, and must bring along hats, sunscreen, and water bottles to stay safe and hydrated in the summer sun.

Children need to make sure to follow all pool safety rules for a fun and safe experience.
