Last call for local artists

LOCAL artists are encouraged to enter their artwork as part of a new art event organised by the Swan Hill branch of the Fight Cancer Foundation.

With past fundraising events under their belt including Beat the Boat, Bo Bear Auction and the Swan Hill Film Festival, the former Bone Marrow Donor Institute (BMDI) branch members have taken on a new challenge for 2022.

The 9 x 5 Art Exhibition and Auction is searching for local artists to submit their pieces for an exhibition and auction that will run from April 1 to May 15 at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery.

The inspiration for the fundraiser was taken from an exhibition that was run by the Heidelberg School of Artists which ran their exhibition in 1889 and featured pieces from artists such as Charles Conder, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton.

Many of the artworks in this initial collection were painted on nine by five inch wooden cigar box lids, with artists encouraged to create their own pieces on wooden boards that are the same size dimensions.

Swan Hill branch member Emily Caruso was pleased with the pieces that had been submitted so far, but was hoping to get the word out so more artists had the chance to submit their very own piece.

“The amazing pieces we have received so far are as incredible and diverse as the artists who are producing them,” she said.

Everyone is encouraged to check out the display at the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery, with the pieces being auctioned off.

The event is a fundraiser for Fight Cancer Foundation’s Back on Track education program for young patients as well as BMDI Rotary house which provides subsidised accommodation close to major hospitals in North Melbourne.

To submit a piece, contact Emily on 0407 080 427 or visit the art gallery to collect a blank canvas.
