THE creative sector has been one of the hardest hit through this pandemic, with venues closed, funding scarce and most people focused on the essentials.
At the same time, it is often the creative sector that steps up to contribute generously within their communities.
The good news is this is being recognised by local councils, who are investing in supporting their artists to have more viable careers.
ArtsACTION is one such initiative councils are investing in to support their artists.
Now in the middle of its fourth delivery, ArtsACTION has seen partnership with 21 regional councils and participation from over 600 artists and creatives to date.
This free professional development program assisting creatives to grow their success is led by not-for-profit Jumpleads NFP via its Pop Up Art division.
The program was transitioned to online formats as a result of COVID so it could reach more artists in regional Victoria.
Made possible with thanks to funding from Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and partnership with eight regional councils, including Ballarat, Central Goldfields, Geelong, Melton, Mildura, Moorabool, Surf Coast, and Swan Hill.
ArtsACTION facilitator Sharon Seyd of Jumpleads NFP said: “Not only are organisations and councils stepping up to assist the sector through the offer of training, capacity building and support networks, but artists themselves are also stepping up.”
“Putting aside the time and commitment required to upskill and put into action new approaches to give themselves the best chance of success in a particularly challenging time, is inspiring.”
Those participating have included emerging and professional creatives/artists.
Many are from a visual arts background but there have also been musicians, writers, digital artists and arts workers.
The current ArtsACTION program is open until April 2022.
This includes workshops being held in February and March.
