Woorinen community warms up for WinterFest

LOCALS are set to rug up and brave the cold in Woorinen this weekend as the Woorinen WinterFest celebrations get under way.

On Sunday local performers will entertain throughout the day, there will be a variety of food vans, face-painting for kids, lantern-making, a selfie stand with a backdrop and props, and fire drums will be located around the venue in order to keep people warm.

The first WinterFest, held in 2019, was regarded as a great success, and Woorinen District Progress Association secretary Lorri Lambert hopes this one will be even bigger.

“I think people found it was just a great opportunity to have a social catch-up with people that they maybe hadn’t seen in ages from around the district,” Ms Lambert said.

“A lot of people said it was a really fantastic event.”

For this year the committee has organised a youth photography competition as a way to get young people involved. With cinema tickets up for grabs, anyone aged 24 or under can enter the competition by taking photos of the yarn-bombing displays around the town or the festival grounds, and post them to the Woorinen WinterFest Facebook page by 5pm on Wednesday.

Contact details, including address and phone number, must then be sent to either Woorinen WinterFest messenger or emailed to woorinendistrict@gmail.com. The photos will then by judged by the committee and the winner will be contacted by Thursday afternoon.

Ms Lambert said getting the festival up and running needed a real team effort.

“What I find remarkable about this community is that you may not exactly have a sheet with who is doing what, but people just turn up and do stuff,” Ms Lambert said,

“It’s just fantastic, people just pop in and help out.”

The Woorinen WinterFest is on this Sunday from 2pm to 7pm at the Woorinen South Hall.
