Epic Amazon tale

OSCAR-winner Viola Davis is a commanding force as General Nanisica in The Woman King, a remarkable true story of the Agojie (also known as the Amazons), the powerful all-female unit of warriors who protected the West African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

As white settlers arrive in Africa, Nanisca warns that the colonisers will not relent until they own all of Africa.

King Ghezo (John Boyega) is not initially convinced if it is worth starting a war over. But some things are worth fighting for…

The unprecedented action-drama, which has been dubbed the ‘Black female Braveheart’, is directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood (Love & Basketball) and written by Dana Stevens. Viola Davis transforms for the role and captures, the immense spirit, strength and bravery of the extraordinary General Nanisca.
