Literary journey for readers

EXERCISE your imagination and join an innovative program at Swan Hill library that’s getting readers’ heart rates up.

Created by an American librarian, the Story Walk project is now used by libraries around the world, including the Swan Hill Regional Library.

“We absolutely loved the idea,” Swan Hill libraries manager Camille Cullinan told The Guardian.

“It encourages families to get out and read a story and get some exercise, so it is also promoting physical wellbeing as well as developing literacy skills and engaging families with books.”

The pages of a book are displayed prominently in buildings around the Swan Hill CBD, encouraging people to embark on both a journey and a story.

There is also a QR code on some pages that brings up a question about that page. If all the questions are answered on the walk, you can go into the draw to win a $50 Swan Hill gift card.

The book chosen for the Story Walk is the picture book Mallee Sky, written by Jodi Toering and illustrated by Tannya Harricks.

“We just thought it was a beautiful link with the Mallee for this time of the year,” Ms Cullinan said.

“We are also investigating opportunities to take the Story Walk out to our smaller towns and up to Robinvale as well.”

The Story Walk will be up around town until the end of the school holidays.

The map is available at the Swan Hill Regional Library’s Facebook page and website.
