Art sends a bush message

SWAN Hill artist Paula Starrs has sent a little bit of country to the city as her artwork is featured in the Pat Cronin Foundation’s Be Wise Art Exhibition.

Starrs, renowned for her bold, Impressionistic artwork of Mallee landscapes, was approached by the foundation after it saw her work on Instagram.

Starrs is one of 29 artists taking part in the exhibition, which will raise money to assist with the educational work of the foundation, which aims to end social violence and prevent the coward punch.

Starrs, who has two teenage sons, said she was already aware of Pat Cronin’s story, and was elated to have work in the exhibition.

“It is something that you worry about when they head out on the town,” she said.

“It’s such a simple thing can happen, so I was more than happy to donate my artwork and time.”

Pat Cronin died aged 19 in 2016 after a coward punch during an evening out with friends.

Starrs has created a painting for the exhibition titled Escape the Day.

“The message was that it had to be about empowerment, optimism or community, but my inspiration (for the artwork) was just if you have had a busy day, there is nothing better than going down one of those tracks, unwinding, just the simplicity of the surroundings – it can sometimes just put your mind at ease,” she said.

“I thought that sending that to the city might just remind people to maybe get out and about beyond the city.”

Pat’s father and foundation director Matt Cronin said the bi-annual art show was important not only for the funds raised for the organisation, but also the awareness it creates of its educational programs and resources for schools and the wider community.

“We’re delighted to have a range of outstanding artists supporting us at this year’s show, which promises to be a wonderful experience for all tastes and budgets,” Mr Cronin said.

“Paula has a significant following and her work is certainly a handsome addition to the show.”

The Be Wise Art Exhibition will run until April 2 at The Barn Gallery at Montsalvat in Melbourne. A gala evening will be held on Friday, including food, drinks and entertainment such as roaming interviews with the artists. Tickets are available for $50. Entry to the show is free at all other times.

“Whether you’re an art lover, a foundation supporter or someone who simply enjoys a great night out for a worthy cause, everyone is welcome,” Mr Cronin said.
