SONGS with a story behind them is what audiences can expect from internationally renowned musician Nick Barker in Swan Hill this weekend.
Performing at the Swan Hill Town Hall this Sunday as part of the Unplugged at the Bar series, the Melbourne-born singer-songwriter has been involved in the music scene for 40 years, being part of bands such as The Wreckery and Nick Barker and the Reptiles before embarking on a solo career.
A particular talent of Barker’s is his knack for storytelling at his performances.
“I’m certainly not a gun guitar player or a great singer, so I’ve got to rely on something, and that’s the ability to tell a story,” Barker told The Guardian.
“I’m of the Mick Thomas school of solo gigs – it’s got to be more than just me up there whinging away on an acoustic guitar.
“I like to try and give as much insight as I can to the songs, because a lot of my songs are pretty poignant, they have got a back story.”
Barker will be supported by local indie rock singer-songwriter Elise Drake, whose music incorporates the darker sounds of the 90s indie rock movement with the sweet, harmony-laden pop hooks.
“I hope people come down to the show, not just to support me, but to support this little program that Simon (Myers) and the town hall is running – it’s a community thing at the end of the day,” he said.
Unplugged at the Bar will take place at the Swan Hill Town Hall on Sunday at 3pm. Tickets cost $20 at the Swan Hill Town Hall website or in person at the town hall bookings office. Tickets are also available at the door for $25.
