Ballet comes to Swan Hill

VICTORIAN State Ballet will bring Hans Christian Andersen’s classic, The Snow Queen to life on stage in Swan Hill next month.

Swan Hill Town Hall will host the two-hour production from 1pm on June 4, in a show that is bound to be adored by young and old.

Town hall manager Simon Myers said he hoped to bring the ballet company to Swan Hill on a regular basis.

“We are really lucky to have Victorian State Ballet,” he said.

“This isn’t something that we take for granted. Victorian State Ballet are really quite unique, in that they put in the effort to tour regionally and rurally.

“We are trying to make this a regular thing. The plan is to have two yearly ballet shows in town every year, roughly around the summer and winter months.

“We hope to have The Nutcracker as our regular Christmas show. We had great success with it last year when we created a Santa land in the front of the hall, which the kids loved.”

As part of the production, more than 20 young dancers from the region attended a workshop earlier this week, with hopes of being able to be part of The Snow Queen.

Mr Myers said it gives a great opportunity for regional dancers.

“Almost all of the girls made it into the performance,” he said. “But even for the ones who didn’t, it’s a great experience and they will have the opportunity to return and aim for next year.

“It is a really great opportunity for our local ballet dancers to take part in this production.”

Mr Myers said audiences couldn expect to be wowed by both the dance and the drama of the performance.

“People can expect to see very high-quality ballet and some beautiful costumes. One of the great things about this ballet company is that I find they have a really good sense of drama.

“The acting skill of these dancers is really good.

“We’ve scheduled the show for a Sunday afternoon to ensure everybody can come along. It’s a 1pm show, which means both young and old can attend.

“Especially with it being football season, we are cognisant of the fact families can have busy Saturdays.

“Rather than having to travel down to Melbourne, and getting to the Victorian Arts Centre, we are lucky enough to have the ballet coming to us.”
