Ballet brings a tale of twists and turns

THE magical and captivating story of The Snow Queen is set to be performed by Victorian State Ballet at the Swan Hill Town Hall next month.

The Snow Queen, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, is performed in two acts, and is full of enchanted imagery, intrigue, drama and suspense.

Victorian State Ballet co-director and chief choreographer Michelle Cassar de Sierra said the production would take audiences of all ages on a journey of twists and turns.

“There are a lot of things going on within the story, but it’s quite intriguing, and they will see some beautiful dancing, some beautiful costumes, some amazing music and beautiful background projections and sets,” she told The Guardian.

Not only does the production feature the talents of professional dancers, but local talent will also be on display, with 22 dancers selected from audition workshops held last week to perform in the production.

The local dancers, who were selected from Dance It Up Studio, Richardson Dance Studio, Dance Force Studio and Parkes School of Dance, will be featured in the village scenes.

“Opportunities like this are really vital I think for the education of those young dancers in the regional and rural communities,” Sierra said.

“They get a little bit closer to that professional life, and for an aspiring young dancer, that’s really important – it’s just bringing more enlightenment into your experience and that journey you want to take to be a dancer.”

Sierra said the Victorian State Ballet has established a wonderful relationship with the Swan Hill community over the years since first bringing a production here in 2016.

“We’re really working on building a really great ballet and arts kind of feel there (in Swan Hill), as there are a lot of really good dance schools, and we want to just to build up that community for the ballet there.”

The ballet takes the stage at Swan Hill Town Hall on Sunday, June 4, at 1pm, and is suitable for all ages. Tickets are available at the Swan Hill Town Hall website or the town hall booking office.
