Queen rhapsody coming to town

QUEEN: It’s a Kinda Magic are bringing Queen’s 1986 Wembley performance to Swan Hill Town Hall.

Fans of big sound, big wardrobes and big performances will be delighted by the four-piece tribute act on July 7 from 8pm.

From his home of Cape Town, the group’s “Freddie”, singer Dominic Warren said it was their first tour of Australia.

“We are yet to have toured Australia with this cast,” he said.

“It’s our first time and we’ve been wanting to come over for a while.

“I don’t really know what to expect yet, but I’m excited to see the reaction to Queen’s music.

“We try to recreate what you would have experienced at Queen’s 1986 Wembley show, but we have also added a few songs that we like doing which Queen didn’t perform live.

“Everything is quite authentic. We try to make it as close as possible, even down to the shoes that I wear.

“We had to custom order them because they had been discontinued, so Adidas made us a pair of the boxing boots that Freddie used to run around in.”

Mr Warren said that when he performs with the group, it’s a mix of both himself and some of Freddie’s stage presence.

“What I always say to people, is that there will only ever be one Freddie Mercury,” he said.

“I’m really not trying to be him, I’m trying to create the best tribute to him that I can.

“I try to do that through the ways I can relate to him, which is with as much energy as possible and working hard to hit those notes.

“You will still see a bit of Dominic Warren there up on stage, but hopefully there will be moments where you can notice some of those Freddie Mercury mannerisms.”

Mr Warren said the music of Queen had been a large part of his musical journey.

“When I was a kid, my uncle showed me Bohemian Rhapsody,” he said.

“Obviously being a bit younger I didn’t really understand it.

“But the melodies really stuck with me and when I got older, I studied classical music, specialising in baroque.

“I started to draw so many parallels between the music, and I find it just as much as a challenge to perform Queen’s music than it is to do Bach and Monteverdi.

“That love of Queen sort of just fell into place for me, and I think it will always have a special place in my life.”

Tickets can be purchased on the Swan Hill Town Hall website.

The Guardian are offering the chance for one lucky reader to win a double pass for the Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic show.

Entries can be submitted through the competitions section of our website, with the competition closing on July 5 at 4pm.
