School of rock ready to roll

SAINT Mary MacKillop College’s epic production of We Will Rock You is almost ready for its stage debut.

The 2.5 hour show is a major commitment for the more than 40 students and the staff involved, and they have been hard at work on the annual school production since last year.

The Ben Elton-inspired show, which features the music of rock legends, Queen, is set in the distant future in a dystopian society where music, musical instruments and individuality are no longer a part culture.

A group of Bohemians struggle to restore the free exchange of thought and fashion, and live music in this bland and featureless society.

All roles in the show – including lighting, sound, band and props – are filled by the students ranging from Year 7-12.

Casting began in term four last year, giving the budding actors time to learn their lines over the Christmas school holidays.

School production coordinator Talia Henderson said they rehearse every lunch time until August.

“Lunchtime is such a short amount of time and that the students end up with about 25 minutes each day,” Ms Henderson said.

“After school is not an option as many kids that are bus travellers and a lot of the older kids do a lot of sport.

“We do some Sundays and some school sessions where we go from lunchtime through to about 5pm.

“The kids are loving it and they are really ready to perform, we have been working on it since the end of last year so they just want to show it off and they have been working really hard.

Year 8 student Ben Nelson has a major role as Galilea Figaro. He said he was very excited about being in the production.

“It will be a great experience, it’s really cool being on stage, especially looking out into the crowd during the show,” Ben said.

“The show is exciting, thrilling and there is a lot of love in it.”

The show is on Thursday, August 17 at 7pm, Friday, August 18 at 7pm and Sunday, August 20 at 2pm.

Tickets for the show, at the school’s Jubliee Centre, range from $10-$65 and are available at https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1062085
