High tea with a dollop of jazz

On Wednesday, October 11 a special event for the Seniors Festival at the Swan Hill Town Hall will have appeal across all ages as the Melbourne-based and internationally renowned musicians The Shuffle Club feature at a jazz high tea.

Getting under way at 11am, it will combine a hot blend of jazz, swing, blues, boogie and infectious energy with a delicious array of teas and food.

The dynamic four-piece band featuring Ashley Gaudion on saxophone/vocals, Dannie Bourne on piano/vocals, Paul Griska on double bass/vocals and Rod Gilbert on drums/vocals has toured internationally across Europe, Asia and Central America, as well as performedg regularly in festivals and clubs all over Australia.

Together for about 25 years as a group, three of them attended Elwood High in Melbourne.

Group drummer and vocalist Gilbert said the three started playing music at a very young age.

“We had a bit of a jazz upbringing as Paul’s father was a well-knownjazz musian and club owner, Peter Gaudian,” Mr Gilbert said.

“In high school we started playing rock and then realised we knew a bit about jazz and through our university years started falling into playing jazz and enjoying it.

“The Shuffle Club has its own sound and although it is a small four-piece group we try to get the sound of a big band.

“Jazz is a genre that describes more than a hundred years of music and there are many types under that jazz umbrella.”

The Shuffle Club likes to consider the music it plays as vintage party tunes, as the members select the best tunes from all the eras and play the ones people enjoy.
