Backyard art takes off

LAKE Boga will celebrate local artists in the Lake Boga Art Exhibition at the at the Catalina Flying Boat Museum.

Several submissions of artwork by passionate locals will be shown, all following the “What’s in my backyard?” theme.

Lake Boga Lions Club member Robyn Howarth said 51 entries showing various approaches had been received.

“Some people have portrayed exactly what’s in their backyard, and some people have considered Australia to be their backyard, and some people painted images of what they wished their backyard would look like,” Ms Howarth said.

“There’s going to be a lot of the Mallee being shown, but some people have also painted spiders and birds and all sorts of things.”

Judging the art on the night will be local dance teacher Raylene Richardson, who is also a skilled textile artist.

Ms Howarth said the exhibition had been “spreading its tentacles” and gaining more out-of-town entries each year.

Kerang resident Rhonda Willoughby, 86, has entered the exhibition for the past two years.

She started painting 18 years ago as “a reason to get out of bed in the morning”.

Local cartoonist Noel Codling has entered a painting based on his pet chicken Speckles.

“I’ve always loved cartoons since I was a kid and have been drawing since I was three,” Mr Codling said.

In 2022, Mr Codling depicted his pet dog with his distinctive art style and won the “Mallee through my eyes” exhibition.

The exhibition will open on Friday at 7.30pm and ends on Sunday.

Local jazz band Lakeside Jazz Ramblers will perform and food and wine will be available.

Visitors can submit their votes for the People’s Choice Award for $1.

Entry is free.
