Gal pals bring Simon hits to Swan Hill

GRACE Knight and Wendy Matthews are no strangers to the Australian music scene and although they have known each other for many years had not collaborated musically until a few years ago.

They are bringing this unique and limited-run show to Swan Hill on Friday May 17 when they perform at the Town Hall.

The songstresses have been crossing paths since the 1980s and over that time have become close friends.

Both are multi-award winners with gold and platinum albums to their credit and extensive catalogues of hits that they still perform, but they wanted to do something different.

At first the pair was unsure of how to format the show so they could be on stage at the same time without performing each other’s catalogue of songs.

They struck on the idea of performing songs from the legendary Paul Simon, considered to be one of the world’s greatest living songwriters, and calling the tour We’re Going To Graceland.

Grace Knight, who performs with Eurogliders and has seven solo albums, said that for many years she and Matthews would meet up backstage at shows and talk about doing something together.

“Years and years went past and we kept saying the same thing and then laughing about it, then just before the pandemic I said we have to park this parrot otherwise it will be too late so let’s just do it,” Knight said.

“We decided we both loved the stories in Paul Simon’s songs and that it was also incredible music.

“The show is so joyous and so much fun and the audience recognises almost every single song because he has had so many hits over his career.

“It’s great to be on stage with my pal, it’s great fun.”

They will be accompanied by a full band and say they really enjoy the audience getting involved and singing along to the hits.

Swan Hill audiences will be in great company, with some of Knight’s audiences including two royal families, five prime ministers and a US president.

Tickets can be purchased at the Swan Hill Town Hall Box Office Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm, by calling on 5036 2384 or by emailing thbookings@swanhill.vic.gov.au
