Putting art on paper

TWO Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery exhibitions opening this Friday night will feature works from its permanent collection in addition to a few works by well known artists.

On Paper and On Country will both be on show until the end of August.

On Paper explores all things paper, from how it is used to how it is made, and the important role paper plays in not only the reproduction of artwork but also as a medium for art.

Paper in some form is a part of our daily lives and has been since the ancient Egyptians started producing papyrus.

As a part of the exhibition, artist Vicki Reynolds will run a paper-making workshop on Sunday, July 21, from 10am to 3pm.

Gallery director Ian Tully said Reynolds was an artist that worked across a variety of mediums, but was also a paper-maker.

“She has been making paper as part of her practice for many years and has been artist in resident to the Museum of Fabriano in Italy and to Japan attending workshops in paper making,” Mr Tully said.

“The other person we have is Jackie Gorring, an artist who works very much with paper but also, importantly, recycled paper and cardboard.

“Her works celebrate that sense of recycling and using every available surface that you can to make artwork on which is just extraordinary.

“Most of these works are from our permanent collection which we are very excited to get out.”

NAIDOC Week will be celebrated with the On Country exhibition featuring traditional weaving, ceramics, etchings, painting and printmaking.

The exhibition will bring some of the regions finest First Nations artists work as well as some from beyond for people to see, some for the first time.

Mr Tully said it is a really lovely show and he is really pleased with the way it has come together.

“I think it will be very popular,” he said.
