Library fun goes beyond the page

SWAN Hill Regional Library will be buzzing with activity for kids of all ages these school holidays.

The library is offering activities for children from ages three to 15 throughout the holidays, from tactile arts and crafts to moving and grooving and digital world-building.

The program is designed to provide engaging activities for children’s developing minds and social skills that are accessible for all families in the community, on top of the library’s existing children’s activities, Swan Hill Libraries manager Camille Cullinan said.

“We run the events at free or very low cost, which makes them accessible to everybody – to all families in our community, and it engages the kids.

“We’ve got a really great variety of activities, and also got games that kids can come and play at any time,” she said.

The program highlight is the free Friends with Honey school holidays bee program, which teaches children about the role that bees play in keeping the planet healthy through song and dance and includes tasting of honey from host Helen’s bees.

Throughout the holidays, children can get creative at the Creation Station and search for Pokemon during the day for the chance to win a $50 Swan Hill Gift Card sponsored by Youth Inc.

Winter Twilight Tales is an evening storytime pyjama party, including a slice of pizza and making snow.

Minecraft Mondays, in both weeks of the holidays, will have children explore and create their own 3D block world, and children can create Lego landscapes and Loom Bands jewellery on both Wednesday afternoons, with all materials supplied by the library.

The Kano Club will help children build their own Kano computer and teach them to code and design their own video game.

Children with the creative bug can design Pokemon scenery using the gelli plate printing method, as seen on Creativebug, for which participants will need to bring their own Coles Pokemon Builders and painting clothes.

The library is collaborating with guests from around the Swan Hill community to bring these activities to life and enrich children’s holidays.

Bella of Bunnings Swan Hill will show children how to make a wind chime with supplied materials, paint and participants’ imaginations.

Swan Hill District Health will join the team to create rainbow burritos just in time for lunch, and the Toy Library is donating its equipment to help transform the library into a jungle inspired by Giraffes Can’t Dance.

Nyah West and Manangatang families can also join the Library Outreach Vehicle on Wednesday, July 3, for craft and play activities. On Thursday, July 4, Manangatang families have their turn.
