Ballet dancers to star on stage

YOUNG local talent will perform with professional dancers for Victorian State Ballet’s production of Snow White at the Town Hall next weekend.

The leading ballet company is returning to Swan Hill after performing The Little Mermaid in June.

“We’ve been touring all over Australia all year,” principal artist Elise Jacques said.

“With this ballet, we’ve already been to Warrnambool and Frankston, and now we’re preparing to premiere it in Swan Hill.”

Jacques said performers were excited to again be working with young ballet dancers in Swan Hill, who also got a lot out of the experience.

“In the past, they’ve loved it,” she said.

“They loved meeting the dancers, learning from them and working with them.

“They’ve also loved wearing the costumes and getting ready for the show.

“And their families and friends get to come and watch them, so that’s also very special for them.”

With about 40 dancers in the travelling production, Jacques said the overall number would be bigger once the local youth extras go on stage with them.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for them,” she said.

“They get to experience an audition with professional dancers.

“If they’re the right fit for the production, we teach them a small part to play.

“Then they’ll get to rehearse for the show with us and ultimately, perform in the production.”

Jacques said with Snow White being a world-renowned fairytale classic, audiences could enjoy a familiar story with characters they know and love through the lens of classical ballet.

With skilled and experienced dancers, Jacques said the graceful choreography and technique of the dancers was set to impress.

Snow White has been a really great story to tell in the form of dance,” she said.

“There will be really amazing storytelling through classical ballet.

“There’s no speaking or singing, it’s all just dancing.

“There’s drama but there are also some comedic parts in the show.

“It’s a great story for the young and old, it’s mature but also child-friendly.”

The show starts at 2pm on Sunday, December 8 at the Swan Hill Town Hall.
