Grease lightning strikes twice

GREASE takes to the stage this Friday night at St Mary MacKillop College after nearly eight months in the making.

School production co-ordinator, Talia Henderson, said audiences should prepare to hand-jive the night away.

“Whether you’re a long-time fan of the musical or discovering it for the first time, Grease at St Mary MacKillop College, is guaranteed to be ‘electrifiyin’,” she said.

Year nine student, Noah Fleming, was cast as Danny Zuko – the musical’s male lead – late last year and spent the summer holidays rehearsing lines and re-watching the era defining 1978 film.

“Everyone’s a little nervous,” Fleming said after a final rehearsal.

“But as soon as we get on stage the nerves go away, and we have a really good time.

“I’m very excited for the part before the show, where we’re all getting ready and talking to each other; everyone’s calming each other down, all looking out for each other.”

Fleming said the camaraderie behind the scenes was great, with cast members forming a strong bond over the months long course of rehearsals.

For Grease afficionados, Fleming said to look out for songs which are not in the movie, with St Mary’s musical delivering its own heartwarming twists.

Although far from Fleming’s first foray into the theatre, the year nine student was stoked to receive one of the leading roles after auditions last year.

“I really like the music in the show; I try and emulate the confidence of Grease Lightning Danny,” he said.

As concertgoers leave the theatre post Friday and Sunday’s show, nattering on the way back to their cars, Fleming said he hoped they would be talking about the show like a time-machine.

“We want them to feel like they’re back in the 70s, when they first saw the movie,” he said.

Friday night’s show begins at 7pm and Sunday’s show at 4.30pm.
