Calder Permaculture hosts worm farming field day

NYAH West-based Calder Permaculture recently hosted an afternoon for members of the Sustainable Living in the Mallee (SLIM) and GIFT Permaculture Community Garden of Swan Hill.

Attendees had the opportunity to discuss all aspects of worm farming and permaculture, in a relaxed and friendly environment, followed by a tour of the farm.

With all attendees being avid gardeners, and some already dedicated users of the liquid worm castings products, the conversation flowed thick and fast.

People shared stories of their success with the product, and were able to view the product in use, across a broad range of applications.

Russell Calder demonstrated the application process for both the liquid product and some new variants currently in the development phase.

The product can be used to soak seeds, prior to planting, directly applied to soil or planting medium, or sprayed onto foliage.

“It was a pleasure to have so many like-minded people in one place, all talking the same passionate language,” Mr Calder said.

“There is great interest in our soon-to-be-released small quantity packaging, which will make the product, currently sold in intermediate bulk containers, very accessible to the home garden market.”

All attendees received a sample of the product, in a new, easy-to-dispense container, which generated much interest among the group.

The GIFT Community Garden operates on Sundays between 2pm and 4pm at Yana Street, Swan Hill.

They have recently launched a seed library, with more information available through their Facebook page.

SLIM is a community-based group that tasked itself with increasing awareness of how to live sustainably in the local region.
