Environmental water in focus at Nyah meeting

THE Swan Hill community will have an opportunity to learn about recent environmental flows in the area in a public meeting on Wednesday.

Terry Korodaj, of the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder southern basin delivery team, will attend the meeting at Nyah Recreation Reserve clubrooms to discuss recent trials of increased environmental flows.

Mr Korodaj will report the impact of increased flows, which took place for two weeks last October, on lakes such as Tooem (Murray Downs Lake), Poomah, Woollare and Talpile (Koraleigh).

The meeting, which starts at 7pm, will also cover the CEWH’s basic role and what rules govern the use of environmental water.

Following Mr Korodaj’s report, attendees will have an opportunity to raise questions about waterway management in the area.

Local stone fruit grower Peta Thornton said the meeting would give the community an opportunity to “understand the governance rules on the river system” and to discuss how to work with government to get “the best results” for region.

“It will be a great chance to have local knowledge taken into account, Ms Thornton said.

“It is a complex system here, with many tributaries joining the Murray.

“We are a long way from weirs and storages though, which offer opportunity to manipulate flows. Local people who have been around a long time have that historical understanding.”
