Safety warning as erosion risk rises

THE Murray River’s high water levels are a spectacular sight, but the council has warned locals and visitors to be cautious and observe signs warning of the risk of riverbank collapse.

Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Director of infrastructure, Svetla Petkova, believes riverbank erosion due to the high water levels is increasing the risk of the riverbank collapsing.“Every time when the river gets high, we are concerned about potential bank erosion,” Ms Petkova told The Guardian.

“The water is flowing very fast, so there is no way of knowing what is happening underneath – the bank can just fall off suddenly without any notice whatsoever.”

The council has put warning signs along the river, including at the Pioneer Settlement, Riverside Park, Nyah and Robinvale, as well as some fencing to keep people off the particularly dangerous banks.

“For most people, is it fairly self-explanatory, but then it also quite appealing for people to go and touch the water,” Ms Petkova said.

A Minor Flood Warning has been issued by the State Emergency Service (SES) for the Murray River downstream of Barham to Wentworth.

“Please observe all warning signs and fencing put in place for public safety, and of course be mindful when walking along our beautiful river – especially when you have little ones in tow,” Ms Petkova said.
