Fire season ends Friday

THE Fire Danger Period in lower western NSW will end on Friday.

Residents in Wentworth and Balrandald will no longer require permits to conduct open-air burning from midnight on Friday.

RFS district manager Steve Walker said although a written fire permit would no longer be required, property owners needed to still exercise “extreme caution” and follow guidelines.

“Residents must notify both the local fire authority and their adjoining land owners or occupiers at least 24 hours prior to burning, as well as taking appropriate action to maintain supervision of the fire so it does not escape and cause damage,” he said.

“Landholders can now provide quick and easy notification via the new online portal via the NSW Rural Fire Service website.”

Mr Walker said penalties applied for failing to provide notice to the appropriate authorities and neighbours that you are lighting a fire, along with additional penalties for allowing fires to escape.

“Even though the weather is cooling down, due to prolific grass growth throughout the area, there is still the potential for fires to threaten life, property and the environment,” he said.
