CMFNL Grand Final 2023 – Football Colts

LAKE Boga’s colts have completed a dream finals run, coming from fourth on the ladder to claim the premiership.

The young Magpies brought immense pressure all game to hand Woorinen their first loss of the year, 12.7 (79) to 7.2 (44).

They showed grit after a 13-point loss to Kerang in the qualifying final, pulling off three consecutive wins against teams above them on the ladder.

From the grand final’s outset, Lake Boga’s midfielders were able to get on top and provide their forwards with clean looks.

The Magpies got the jump on their opponents, but Woorinen’s accurate kicking kept them in the game.

A pair of goals from Adam Saunders had the Tigers crowd up and about early, but their opponents’ pressure turned up even more in the second term.

Kicking four goals to one, Lake Boga extended the margin to 27 points at the main break.

Woorinen fought back somewhat in the third quarter to cut it back to 19 points, before any hopes of a comeback were put aside.

Lake Boga kicked four goals to two in the final term.

A team-based game stifled their opponents’ run, each Magpies player pressuring the ball carrier to the best of their abilities.

Woorinen’s Len Mathieson Medallist Tahj Bolton was given close attention by opposing ruckman Koben Ryan, but still showed flashes of his usual strong play.

Ryan and his teammates doing enough to quell Bolton’s influence, while Ryan and teammate Charlie Bryan each kicked two goals.

Bodi Clune was the main goalkicker, booting four.

Single goalkickers for the Magpies were Harrison Bull, Kai Everett, Xavier Sherlock and the player adjudged best on ground, Nicholas Taylor.

Rewarded for his commanding performance across the half-forward line and through the middle, Taylor competed in the air and when the ball hit the ground.

He provided a target down the line and his hands were impeccable, clunking marks all game.

Taylor also provided run up and down the ground, and was able to pick out a forward with quick kicks.

Woorinen’s best was Saunders, who played a key role in their forward play and claimed a bag of goals.

He was supported by Hugh Thompson, who kicked two goals of his own.

Defenders Hudson Gardner and Cooper Beasy were among the best for their strong defensive display throughout.
