Disc golf a new spin on classic sport

DISC golf has been a hit with families these school holidays at Nyah West Golf Club, and club secretary Graham Muir has plans to keep the game running year round.

“It’s been positive, really successful – we were running disc golf on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the school holidays, and it’s been so popular that as of this week, anytime somebody wants to play they can book in,” Mr Muir said.

“We’ve just been overwhelmed with the response. We’ve had children with their mums and dads, their grandparents – we had one family who have been out here about three times now, the kids are just so keen on it.”

Disc golf is played through whizzing discs into nets and follows similar rules to the traditional game, where the disc is played where it lies, and if it goes into the net straightaway it’s a hole in one.

“The disc golf was part of a larger concept we had, where we would have sports affiliated with golf on the grounds,” Mr Muir said.

“It was made possible through a Reimagining Health Grant through Victoria Health, and we’ve also had incredible sponsorship from Sebastian Parseghian from Swan Hill and Kerang Toyota.”

Having received the funds, the club was setting up the infrastructure when COVID-19 hit.

“It was unfortunate, we have had to delay it for awhile, but at least now that it’s up and running, we have been surveying people and we’ve had a 100 per cent positive feedback rate,” Mr Muir said.

“We’re just rapt, because it is just something so unique.”

Regionally, disc golf is available only at Nyah West, but Mr Muir said he wouldn’t be surprised to see more courses pop up.

“It’s definitely a growing sport in Australia, and in the US they have actual competitions, similar to opens.

“They have crowds and everything, it’s really quite amazing.”

Disc golf will be free to play at the Nyah West Golf Club over the next 12 months, however disc hire is $5.

The club is in the process of setting up online booking through its Facebook page. The club’s phone number is 5030 2295.
