The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

Some outstanding scores have been recorded over the past week at Murray Downs.

It all started with the recently retired Rick Austerberry’s (23) score of 43 stableford points in last Thursday’s competition, followed by Sebastian Parseghian (26) scoring 40 points on Saturday and then Charlie Kingwill’s (23) score of 44 points in Sunday’s competition.

I’m not sure if the course is getting easier to play or more players are taking advantage of having extra practice rounds, but it all augers well for our upcoming club championships, which will commence on the weekend of November 6th and 7th.

With his score of 43 points, in last Thursday’s event, Austerberry was the best in Division 2, closely followed, in this division, by Andrew McLean (23) with 39 points.

Tony Wilson (24) was the best in Division 3 with 40 points, slightly ahead of Ray Holdsworth (30) on 35 points, whilst in Division 1, Ross Hastings (9) carried on with his recent good form by scoring 40, to take out the division from Ray Power (11) who came in with 38 points.

The ball rundown was red hot, as other players required at least 35 points to be in the running.

Some very good shots were played into the Par 3 holes, but there were none better than the shot of George Barnes on the second hole, were he hit it to 16cm.

The other NTP’s were taken out by Robert O’Brien on the 5th, Colin Mewburn on the 11th and Mark Warren on the 15th.As mentioned previously, Sebastian Parseghian (26) scored 40 points, to be the best from Saturday’s competition and in doing so took out Division 3.

He was very closely followed by Patrick Kennedy (26) with 39 points. Division 2 was taken out by Dale Rogers (12) with 38 points, from Ron Munro (18) who scored 37 points, whilst in Division 1, Oliver Rohde (11) was the best with 39 points, from the inform Ross Hastings (9) on 36 points, with all other players requiring at least 34 points to get a ball.

Leigh Evans, Wayne Wisby, David Bourne and Andrew Gilchrist hit the lucky shots on the par three holes.

And then onto Sunday’s competition and again some very good scores were recorded in all divisions.

As mentioned, Charlie Kingwill (23) was the best with his 44 points, but he needed every one of them to claim Division 2’s main prize, as another of our promising juniors in Wil Hawkins (23) was hot on his heals with 43 points.

Similarly in the other divisions, Daniel Cruickshank (7) took out Division 1 with 43 points from Sean Baumgurtel (7) on 40 points, while in Division 3, another very promising junior in Hugh Thompson (42) also had an excellent day, recording 42 points, to take out this division from Stephan Mangiameli (25) with 40 points.

Brenton Halligan (17), led the ball rundown with 41 points, James McLean (2) had a warm up for the club championships with a 1 under par round for 39 points.

Others required 34 points and more to be included in the ball comp.

Meanwhile the nearest the pins were claimed by Robert Forster on the 2nd, Andrew McLean on the 5th, Sean Baumgurtel on the 11th and James Mclean on the 15th.

Tuesday’s competition was again a stableford event in two divisions.

The best score recorded was by Brett Farlie (28) being an excellent 43 points and in doing so took out the 2nd divisions major prize.

Runner-up in this division was Tony Wilson (25) with a very respectable 39 points.

The Division 1 winner was decided by the count-back system, when Neville Brady (3) and Mark Warren (10), both came in with the same score of 38 points, with Brady coming out on top.

Wayne Wisby had his eye in on the par three holes by taking off the NTPs on holes 5 & 15.

Paul Bethune and Brent Daniels did likewise on holes 2 & 11, whilst in the ball run-down scores of 35 and more were required to be in the running.

The “Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens” nine-hole summer competition is off to a flier.

Seventeen teams have entered and in the first week of the competition 93 rounds/cards were submitted.

This all means that some players weren’t very happy with their attempted and for their team’s support, had a second or third go at trying to improve for their team effort.

The best score submitted in this the first week, was a brilliant score of 25 points from one of our up-and-coming juniors, in Hugh Thompson and with his score leading the way, his team of “Young Guns”, consisting of Wil Hawkins, Charlie King & Mitch Uhlhorn, they recorded the best team score for the week of 64 points.

The next best team score of 60 points was submitted by “Arnie’s Angels”, followed by the “Currawong Courters”, “Golden Oldies”, and “Kenyon’s Trainees” all with 59 points.

A few teams haven’t submitted a team name, so hopefully this can be amended very shortly.

On Wednesday November 24, we will be holding “The Murray Open Pro Am”, which will be an “Irish Stableford 4Ball” event, followed on Thursday and Friday, November 25 and 26, by the Murray Open, which is a qualifying round for the NSW Open.

We have 30 professionals committed for the “Pro Am” and 90 professionals for the “Murray Open”.

Entry forms for the “Pro Am” are available in the breezeway at the club.

It’s a first in best served for the “Pro Am” on full payment of the entry fee, which includes a two-course dinner at Murray Downs on the Wednesday evening.
