Golf Report December 10

MURRAY DOWNS MENGRAHAM McLellan, has taken out the December Monthly Medal, with a nett score of 71.

McLellan, playing from his current handicap of 14, had to survive a three-way count-back, to be awarded the medal.

The unlucky Laurie Shipsides (14) and Scott Mathiske (7) had to be satisfied with the spoils.

McLellan’s score was the best in division, from Shipsides, with Mathiske leading the ball run-down.

The best score of the day was recorded by Leigh Paynter (20) a visitor from Nyah West, with a nett score of 67 and in doing so took out the second division’s main prize, from the Captain, Mick Kiley (21) who finished with nett 72.

The count-back system came into play again, to separate the best in division 3, was a visitor from the Wooden GC, in Wayne Patterson (23) he came out on top with a nett 75, from Robert James (23).

As mentioned, Mathiske led the ball run-down with nett 71, with other recipients of a ball requiring scores of nett 76 or better.

The nearest the pins were taken out by Andrew Flanagan on the 2nd, Andrew McNamara (Eastwood GC) on the 5th, Tim Free on the 11th, which was measured at 79cm and in doing so, claimed the jackpot for being inside the magical meter and Gerard Moloney made a welcome return to golf after an extended layoff, by being the closest on the 15th.

On Sunday, in the stableford competition, Tim Free (17) and Damian Mangiameli (23) recorded the best score of the day, of 42 points and in doing so, each won their respective divisions, 2 & 3.

Runner-up to Mangiameli in division 3 was a visitor from Futures golf, in Dahne Eden (24) with 39 points and Leigh Evans (16) was the runner-up in division 2 with 37 points.

The count-back system again got a working over, in separating the 2 best in division 1, when Jordan Weekly (14) and Mark Free (13) both came in with 37 points, with Weekly coming out on top.

Other players required at least 35 points to get a ball, whilst the NTPs were taken out by Kain Domaille, James Beard, Brenton Halligan and Andrew Franklin (Woodend GC), on holes 2, 5, 11 & 15 respectively.

In rather stifling weather conditions, last Thursday one the smallest fields for a long time, took part in the stableford competition, in 2 divisions.

Terry McEwan (20) was the standout player, putting together a good score of 40 points, to claim the major prize and division 2 honors, from Andrew McLean (25) who finished with 38 points.

Division 1 went the way of Stuart Holt (12) over Justin Thompson (12), with both players coming in with the same score of 35 points.

Other players required at least 33 points to be included in the ball run-down.

Meanwhile, in the nearest the pin (lucky shots), Ross Kenyon was the closest on the 2nd, as was Arnold Kirby on the 5th, Graeme Mathiske on the 11th and Greg Daniels on the 15th.

Tuesday’s competition was against “Par”, with a smallish field taking part, in 1 division. Rob O’Brien (23) and Shane Kelly (19), both finished square with the card, for outright bragging rights, with O’Brien coming out in front.

Darryl Domaille (-1), Chris Hodgson (-1), Ray Holdsworth (-2) & Tony Wilson (-2), each received a ball for their efforts, whilst Mark Warren and Darryl Domaille took out the NTPs on holes 2 and 11.

In the seventh week of the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens 9-hole summer competition, there was once again some very good scores recorded, but there were no better than the 22 points scored by Rosie Ficarra and Dione Heppel for their team “The Girls” and “Young & Restless”.

Consistent golfer Ross Kenyon scored 20 points as did Gaye Legudi.

As the current competition concludes on this Sunday December 12, the overall teams and individual players scores are very close at the top.

The winners will be announced on Sunday evening, when the presentations and BBQ are held.

This will take place in the Mayers Gazebo from 4pm.MURRAY DOWNS WOMENKATHY Parkinson is the 2021 Golfer of the Year at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

This title is awarded to the most consistent competitor and Kathy has shown her ability to be amongst the top ten golfers on a Wednesday over the golf season.

Kathy is renowned for her length off the tee and is a former club champion.

The presentation of annual trophies was held after the Christmas golf day on Wednesday.

Val Hedwards took out the Donnington Cup, a Singles knockout event between the leading golfers after the championships, Jenny Lynas won the Medal of Medallists and Mag Kiley received the Holts Spring Brooch.

Eighty-one ladies were dressed in their Christmas finery.

Bev Kelly has just recently started to compete on a Wednesday and her 39 points from her 40 handicap saw her take out the best score of the day title, and C grade winners prize but only after she survived a count back from the B grade winner, Marj Elston (24)

Runners-Up in these divisions were Bev West (27) 36 points and Di Nalder (29) 38 points.

Dianne Plant (17) 38 points and Jan Butcher (16) 37 points were the A grade winners.

Mary Johnson 38 points led the ball pool followed by Jill Brown, Maryann Mathiske, Heather Evans, Tina King and Eileen Morath, all 36 points.

Julie Overall, Deryn Pinney and Kerry Gammon all hit the ball within 2 metres of the flag on the 11th hole to share the jackpot with the other NTP’s going to Mag Kiley, Georgina Douglas and Judy McMahon.

Jan Butcher and Pam Austerberry won the nearest the Santa prizes.

Shelley Wilkins (20) 39 points was Saturday’s leader with Dione Heppell (11) and Anne Webb (27) both on 37 points.

Jill McIndoe and Jenny Lynas collected NTP prizes.

Vice-Captain Pam Austerberry (25) found Sunday’s conditions to her liking with a sizzling 41 points to win from Yarrawonga GC visitor Donna Hancock (13) with 40 points.

Libby Gregory also found form with 38 points from her 27 handicap.VETERANS GOLF RESULTSONLY 22 veteran golfers played in the stableford event at Tooleybuc on Tuesday December 7.

The course was in wonderful condition thanks to the greenkeepers.

Thanks to “Trakka” for her assistance and to Marg Learmonth for the NTP trophies, Lorraine Bray for the bon bons, and a big thank you to Andrew Peace Wines for their donation of wine.

Ladies’ winner with 35 points was Lorraine Bray and runner-up was Carol Letheby.

Men’s winner was the sweet-swinging Ian Dodd with 36 points on a count-back from Hank van de Veen.

NTPs Carol Letheby and Lisa Hyne, Marg Learmonth, Sue Thompson, Ray Henshall, Greg Gin, Joe Tartaglia and Ian Dodd.

The next veterans event is at Barhamon on Tuesday February 15 2022, 8.30am assembly for a 9am start.
