The 19th Hole February 4

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

WE have had a very busy week of golf at Murray Downs, starting on Wednesday, January 26 with the Baileys Ag Ambrose Day with more than 150 players competing.

Leigh Evans and Caleb Beggs took out the event with a nett score of 60, closely followed by Tristan Ramadge and Daniel Cruickshank with nett 61.

Vall Hedwards and Lyn Merrett won the ladies’ event with 67.75 nett beating Jenny Monohan and Rosie Ficarra by countback.

Thursday was a standard competition day with the men playing par, with Chris Mahon unstoppable on his way to winning C Grade with the top score of the day +5.

Corey Daniels won A Grade with +2 and Greg Daniels was top of B Grade also on +2.

The 28th Annual Reciprocal Challenge was held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday with 248 players eager to compete with the Friday 4bbb competition won by Barham pair Kyra Laughlin and Sue Thompson with an astonishing 50 points.

Not far behind was local pair Kerri Gammon and Ian Gammon on 49 points.

The top men’s score on Saturday was Neville Brady with 43 points while Barb Cadd was top of the ladies with 41 points and on Sunday we saw Arnold Kirby with 43 points and Lisa Brady with 39 points both top scorers for the day.

The overall visitor team prize was won by Dan Irvin, Geoff Viney, Mick Haintz and Road Doak from the Buninyong Golf Club with 219 points over the weekend.

Jorgen Leschke, Brenton Halligan, Arnold Kirby and Jordan Weekley came first in the members event with a huge 233 points from the weekend.

It was great to see everyone back for the reciprocal tournament and we are looking forward to hosting everyone again.

On Tuesday we returned to a standard men’s competition day with Francesco Cianci cleaning up the men’s par competition with +2.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

A COOL southerly wind brought welcome relief to the 62 competitors in the February Monthly Medal at MDG&CC on Wednesday.

Captain Mag Kiley was the recipient of the Medal and the A Grade winner’s prize after carding 88-17-71.

This was Mag’s fifth medal win, and just reward for the huge amount of work that Mag and her committee do in organising golf for almost 52 weeks of the year, not to mention the extra problems that COVID has brought to bear.

Janette Tucker was runner-up with a score of 98-24-74.

In B Grade, Clare Nalder-Martin scored 77 nett from her 26 handicap to win on a count back from Kerry Gammon (29).

Heather Evans (37) 74 nett won C grade from Jenny Lynas (30) 76 nett.

Anne Webb & Shelley Wilkins both 74 nett led the ball pool which went to scores of 77.

Jude Simmonds collected two NTP prizes with the others going to Claris Bourne and Carolyn Zambelli, with Rhonda Barrow’s 29 putts winning her the putting comp.

Condolences are extended to the family of Nan Pinney, who passed away recently.

Nan’s contribution to golf both as an administrator and competitor at the Donnington Golf Club was rewarded with a Life Membership.

Nan will be long remembered for her love of golf and dedication to detail when organising tournaments.

On a happier note, Kerang Golf Club and Murray Downs member, 12-year-old Olive Spitty has taken out the Club championship at the prestigious Commonwealth Golf Club.

Olive has been a member at Commonwealth since last year and has certainly made history at the club by being the youngest ever member to win the championship.

Her opponent for the 36-hole play-off was Kristi Bilkey and the scores were tied after the first 18 holes but Olive prevailed with a score line of 5 up with four holes to play.
