MURRAY DOWNS MENS
Over the long weekend we saw huge numbers of golfers come down to take on the course at Murray Downs.
Last Thursday we held a Stableford Competition as Gene Brooks won A Grade and playing to his 11 handicap finishing on 36 points, Johannes Engelbrecht’s (22) 37 points was the winner of B Grade.
On Saturday we held our Four Man Irish Stableford Event, and only three points separated the top five teams, the team of the day winning on a score of 91 points was James Downing, Jackson Quirk, Jorgen Leschke and Arnold Kirby.
Second place on 90 points and decided by countback from third was Scott Mathiske, Brendan Mathiske, Matt Kent and Josh Gadsen, and third was taken by Brian White, Alan Mason, Rob Smith and Gene Brooks.
Sunday’s Stableford Competition brought a nice sized field of 71 players in our Men’s Competition, no one could catch Greg Roberts (15) whose score of 43 points, had him taking out the day and top of B Grade.
A Grade’s winner was Colin Mewburn (11), while B Grades winner was Simon Bobko (26) who both had a score of 38 points.
Due to the public holiday in Victoria we also held a Stableford Competition on Monday, as Tyler Aitken (10) and Jorgen Leschke (6) both scored 41 points in A Grade, Tyler was decided the winner after a close countback.
Brady Hogan (19) was also having a good day in B Grade on 38 points.
To finish of this week of Men’s golf a small field competed in Tuesday’s Stableford Competition, Ross Hastings (6) the best of them all on 39 points, also having nearest the pin on the 5th hole.
It was Ross’s third for the week after also getting two in Saturday’s Competition.
MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
Kristy Gordon is a relatively new member at Murray Downs but on Wednesday she showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the 62 competitors in the Par Event.
Kristy, who plays off a handicap of 20, had recently endured a stretch of poor golf form and sought help from the new golf professional Lisa Jean, this has resulted in three consecutive successful outings.
Wednesday’s score of 5 up was the icing on the cake.
The next best score was in B grade where Ruth McAlister (28) scored 2 up.
Runners-up in these two grades were Bev Holt (25) 1 up and Julie Overall (30) square.
In C grade, Lois Coady (35) 1 up and Lyn Beasy (36) square were the winners.
Nonie Domaille, Carolyn Zambelli and Eilleen Willox led the ball pool on square.
Judi Lonergan, Avis Shipsides, Joy Sheldrick and Judi Benbow took out ntp honours.
An Irish Four Ball was Saturday’s event as the team of Kristy Gordon, Sue Davis, Belinda Gardner and Gaye Legudi were successful on 88 points.
Claris Bourne collected two ntp’s on the second and fifth as Jan Butcher was the most accurate on the 11th.
Gaye Legudi (30) and Kristy Gordon (21) both scored 37 points on Sunday as Gaye was successful after the count back.
A new 9 Hole Medley competition has been implemented by the committee, this will take place anytime on a Friday and entries are via the timesheet.
VETERAN
There were only 25 veteran golfers who arrived in Kerang for the Stableford Event on Tuesday 15, this was a pity because the course was in great condition and the rain stayed away.
The AGM was held after golf and Ruth ,Graham and Ray will still be in charge.
Michelle Dillon on 36 points won from Meryl Cameron 35 points in the Ladies Event while Ray Henshall on 39 points was the winner from Fred O’Bryan on 36 points in the Mens Division.

DADS ARMY
Monday March 14 saw the final day of the Dads Army Golf Group’s Masters Championship at Murray Downs.
The event is played over three rounds of 9 holes and at the conclusion of the deciding round, golfers and partners enjoyed a barbecue lunch followed by the presentations.
This year’s event turned out to be very unique because the oldest golfer in the group finished 3 shots ahead of the runner-up.
Ian Lindsay, aged 91, was presented the ‘green jacket’ that is handed over each year, ‘one size fits all’, the special Masters Champion cap and a voucher, Gavin Scown was the runner-up on a countback from John Brereton.
Ian’s win was made even more memorable by his daughter from Malaysia paying him a visit and being alongside him when he was pronounced the Champion.
The group’s 4-ball Championship was played the previous week and presentations were made to the winners Rob Allen and David Quayle and the runners-up, Gavin Scown and Rob Smith.
Dads Army is a group of golfers who are all aged over 60 who play 9 holes twice a week at Murray Downs.
The group has been playing for over 20 years and the majority of members only play with the group, but there are a number who still play 18 holes in regular competitions, at present there are 27 members.
The main aim is to enjoy their golf and there is a strong feeling of camaraderie and support within the group.
