MURRAY DOWNS LADIES’

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD golf prodigy Olive Spitty is the 2022 Club Champion at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club. Olive’s three round scores were 76, 83 and 80, which saw her finish 20 shots clear of runner-up Maree Thurwood.

Olive, who is also the reigning champion at the prestigious Commonwealth Golf Club and a member of their winning Division 1 pennant team, recently won the Victorian Country Championship at the Cobram Barooga Club with a two-round score of 156, four shots clear of her nearest rival.

Lynne Bishop took out the A Grade handicap section with a three-round total of 213, with Maree Thurwood again finishing runner-up with 223.

Marg Moore won the B Grade title from Sue Davis, with scores of 273 and 281 respectively. It was the same result in the handicap section, where Marg scored 216, two shots clear of Sue.

In C Grade, big occasion competitor Jenny Lynas scored 304, six shots clear of Barb Cadd. Jenny also won the handicap section with 214, while Barb was again runner-up with 226.

Lois Tippett, with a score of 226, is the D Grade champion, who finished six shots clear of runner-up Deb Kelly on 232.

There are perpetual trophies presented in conjunction with the championships, with Marg Moore taking out the Hazel Holt Memorial trophy, Jenny Lynas the Monica Bailey Memorial trophy and Lois Tippett the Kennedy’s Showcase Jewellers prize. Lynne Bishop won the Jess Petzke Memorial trophy for the best nett score over all grades and Marg Moore was also crowned the 2022 Seniors champion.

On Wednesday, the three grade winners scored 72 nett from their respective handicaps in perfect conditions. In A Grade, Lynne Bishop (15) is showing the result of several coaching lessons with golf pro Lisa Jean to win the day, and Maree Thurwood (12) 75 finishing as runner-up.

The C Grade winner was Carolyn Zambelli (28) with the runner-up being Jenny Lynas (29) on a score of 73. Libby Miller (42) was the successful D Grader, winning from Heather Evans (36) 81.

Twenty-one markers Sue Davis and Carol Wiseman have spent their Monday mornings helping new and old golfers for the past seven years and on this occasion featured as the B Grade winners, with scores of 74 and 75 respectively.

Lois Carnie and Eilleen Willox led the ball pool with a 75 nett score – while Elaine Brown hit the ball within two metres to collect the jackpot on the 11th, with the other accurate shots to the par threes being executed by Kathy Parkinson, Lois Tippett and Lynne Bishop.

The Saturday competition winners in A Grade were Lynne Bishop (16) 41 points – which was obviously a precursor to Wednesday’s good round – with the runner-up prize going to Sarah Clark (22) on 35 points.

Riverside Golf Club visitor Janette Mason, scored 38 points and won B Grade from Jenice Krahnert (28) on 34 points. Shelley Wilkins won two Nearest The Pin prizes, with the others going to Marg Moore and Maryann Mathiske.

Junior Audrey Domaille (41) is quickly following in the footsteps of her golfing grandmother Kathy Parkinson and mother, Noni – and on Sunday she scored 44 points to win the medley competition and will no doubt have a much lower handicap when she next steps up to the first tee.
