The 19th hole, July 15

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

MURRAY Downs is still being inundated with a large number of golfers taking advantage of having a hit on the number one course along the Murray River – even during these colder months.

This was none more evident than in last Thursday’s stableford competition, which saw three divisions of players taking part in the mid-week event. The best score of the day came out of Division 3, where Tori Ficarra (26) recorded his best score for a very long time with 41 points, to take victory ahead of Greg Butcher (27) with 35 points. A visitor from the Eastern Golf Club in Hugh Ferrie (18) took out Division 2 with 38 points from John Tripodi (17) on count-back – while in Division 1, Craig Fletcher (14) was the best with 39 points from Graeme Mathiske (14) on 38 points.

In the nearest the pins, Corey Daniels was the closest on the 2nd, Craig Fletcher on the 5th, Ian Read took home the jackpot on the 11th and Daniel Cruickshank was closest on the 15th. To be in the ball rundown you required at least 34 points.

Friday’s nine-hole competition was taken out by Tynan Perry (20), with 20 points from Claris Bourne (30) next best on 19 points.

A very good field of golfers took part in Saturday’s stableford event, which also coincided with the grand final of the Swan Hill Wholesalers “Premier League” competition. Jim DeGregorio (22) recorded the day’s best score of 38 points and took out Division 3 from Gary Slater (20) on 36 points. Division 2 was taken out by Andrew Halligan (15) with 35 points by way of a count-back from Laurie Shipsides (12), while in Division 1, Daniel Cruickshank (3) led the way with 37 points from Brenton Gurnett (10) who finished with 34 points. Gene Brooks, Mick Scott, Jorgen Leschke and Neville Brady all hit the lucky shots on the par 3 holes.

In the Premier League Grand Final, it was the undefeated Sticky Bandits who came out on top over the Royal Goat Trackers 139 points to 133. For the Bandits, Daniel Cruickshank led the way with 37 points and was ably assisted by Sarah Clark and Andrew Halligan, both with 35 points and Brenton Cruickshank chipping in with 32. The best for the Goats was their captain Tony Ford and Brenton Gurnett, who both scored 34 points, with Graeme Mathiske (33) and Kain Domaille (32). The player of the series went to Jackson Quirk of the Bandits team.

On Sunday there were two events, a mixed Chapmans and a medley singles stableford competitions, for those without a mixed partner. The mixed Chapmans was taken out by Ken and Libby Gregory with a nett 78.75 from Keith and Cheryl Stockdale with nett 79.25. In the singles event, Andrew Petersen (10) was the best with 38 points from Kristy Gordon (16) 37 points. Nearest the pins went to Chris Knee, Colin Mewburn, Andrew Petersen and Craig Davies.

This Sunday, all matches will be played at Murray Downs, where we will be up against Deniliquin while Barham will face off against Rich River.

The ladders as they stand after two rounds in Division 1 has Murray Downs (8 points) on top, followed by Deniliquin and Rich River (4 points) with Barham (0).
