The 19th hole, July 29

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

JOE Dorigo was the standout player following last Saturday’s stableford competition at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club, which was played from the black tee markers.

Dorigo, a relatively new player to golf, recorded an excellent score of 41 points from his handicap of 32, to take out division 3 from Paul O’Loughlin (29) by a single point. O’Loughlin then in turn knocked off the very unlucky Bill Gurnett (36) by way of the countback system for runner-up in this division.

Ricky Pickering (21) took out division 2 on 40 points from David Bath (18), who was a visitor from the Cobden Golf Club and finished with 38 points. The countback system again came into play again to separate Luke Merritt (1) and Ross Kenyon (13) for division 1 honours, when both players finished on 37 points each, with Merritt eventually getting the result to go in his favour.

The unlucky, long-serving board member and former president and life member Bill Gurnett, recorded his best score for a very long time of 40 points, to lead the ball run down, which went to scores of 34 points. Matt Harrop had two very good shots into holes 11 and 15 to claim the nearest the pins on both holes, with Stuart McLean and Bobby Kelly doing likewise on holes 2 and 5.

Sunday’s competition was against par and played across two divisions, with the countback system again needed to decide the winner of both divisions. Division 1 went to Chris Smith (12), who won from Ashley Free (4), with both players finishing at one up, while in division 2 it was Jared Halligan (19) who came out on top in front Jason Baird (21), with both players recording scores of four up. In the ball rundown, scores of one up and better were required to get a ball, with the nearest the pins going the way of Tyan Perry on the 2nd, Dale Smith on the 5th, Jorgen Leschke on the 11th and Mick Kiley on the 15th.

Friday’s nine-hole competition was taken out by Jason Baird (21) on 21 points – while in last Thursday’s competition of against par, it was Ross Kenyon (12) who finished square with the card to take out division 1 from Lyonel O’Shannassy (12) who also finished at square. In division 2, Tony Wilson (27) recorded the day’s best score of two up, in front of Gordon Parsons (23) who finished 1 up. Scores of 2 down and better were required to be eligible in the ball rundown, with the Nearest the Pins going the way of Doug Grant on the 5th hole, Colin Mewburn on the 11th and Gordon Parsons, who topped off a good day by claiming the prize on the 15th.

On Tuesday this week, Les McPhee (30) got the chocolates with his 38 points from Mark Warren (9) who finished on 37 points. Adam Mangiameli (36 points), Ross Hastings (34 points), David Bath (34 points) and Ian Francis (33 points) each got a ball for their efforts, while the lucky shots were hit by Ross Hastings on the 11th hole and Geoff Bett on the 15th.

This Sunday, we have the PGA four-person ‘scramble’ event, where the winners of the day will qualify for regional final, to be played at the Tocumwal Golf Club on Wednesday, October 5. On the weekend of August 27 and 28 will be the very popular 36-hole two-person ambrose tournament for both men and women. This event is starting to fill rather quickly, so if you wish to be a part of it, please get your entry into the pro shop quickly.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

A SINGLE stableford event, sponsored by L.J Hooker, was the event set down for competitors on Wednesday at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club. Jenny Monahan, principal of the Swan Hill office, presented the trophies to the successful players, who enjoyed the benign wintry conditions.

Jan McLean was the star of the day, winning division 2 with 39 points, while runner-up was Heather Evans on 34 points.

In division 1, Judi Benbow continued her in-form run with 35 points to win from Gaye Legudi on 34 points. Faye Palmer (34 points) and both Jenny White and Lois Carnie (33 points) led the ball rundown, while Mag Kiley collected nearest the pin prizes on the 2nd and 15th holes, with Rosie Ficarra successful on the 11th.

Early rain frightened off most of Saturday’s golfers, but late starter Sarah Clarke (21) with 35 points won the spoils in a small field. New member Wendy Talbot (34) and Kristy Gordon (33) collected balls.

Sunday’s winner was Mary Johnson (35) with a score one up, who won a count back from Dione Heppell (11), with Tara Free (43) next best on square.
