MURRAY DOWNS MENS

A visiting team from Cohuna won the 2022 Murray Downs PGA Scramble event last Sunday.

The team consisting of Paul Robinson, Gary Valentine, Patrick Doyle and Peter Doyle recorded a very good scratch score of 13 under par – 69, for a nett score of 52.625 to take out the event by half a shot from an Axedale team, that consisted of Max Kettle, Paul Blakely and Anthony and Kristy Strybosch, all of whom who finished with a nett score of 53.125.

These two teams will now go on to the regional final, which will be played at the Tocumwal Golf Club on October 5 and represent Murray Downs for a place in the National Final.

In third position was the Free family, with Dallas, Ash, Lucas and Tara recording a score of nett 54, and were followed by Brad Cockfield, Spencer McKenzie, Tyler Aitken and Mick Kiley a further .25 points behind in fourth position, with a nett 54.25 score.

Last Saturday, the competition was against par and held over three divisions, with Neil Bailey (24) being the standout player with 4 up and taking out Division 3 from Sebastian Parseghian (25) at 2 up. Dale Smith (13) and Graeme Mathiske (11) led Division 2 with 1 up, with Smith getting the favourable nod – whilst in Division 1, it was Corey Daniels (10) who led the way with a score of 2 up, followed by Ken Gregory (8) at 1 up. Cayle McLean led in the ball rundown with 2 up, which went down to scores of 1 down and in the Nearest the Pins, it was Graeme Mathiske who was the closest of the 5th, Brian White on the 11th and Graeme Cox, who did likewise on the 15th.

Shane Ingram (9) took out Friday’s nine-hole competition with 20 points, meanwhile in last Thursday’s stableford competition, it was Andrew McLean (27) who found some good form to record 39 points and in doing so took out Division 2, from Joey Higgins (29) on 37 points. Graeme Mathiske (14) also hit some good form, to lead the way in Division 1 with 36 points, ahead of Doug Grant (9) who finished on 35 points. Other players required at least 31 points to be eligible for a ball, whilst Neville Brady, Mark Warren and Laurie Shipsides all hit it very close on holes 2, 5 and 11 to claim the Nearest the Pins on offer.

On Tuesday this week, a small field of golfers took part in a stableford competition, where Tony Wilson was the stand out player with 40 points from his handicap of 25, to win the voucher. Next best, with 32 points apiece, were Neil Bailey and Geoff Bett, with Graeme Mathiske following them with 31 points and all getting a ball for their efforts.

The 36-hole Ambrose event is fast approaching, with entries still coming in for both the AM and PM sides of the draw. Also coming up in the very near future, the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club will be hosting the Murray Open, which is a qualifying round for the NSW Open. A Pro Am “Irish 4Ball” format will be held preceding this event on Monday, September 5, which will be followed by the Murray Open on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 6 and 7. Entry forms are available, either online or through the Pro Shop.
