The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

Gary Slater has taken out the October monthly medal at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

Slater, playing off his daily handicap of 24, recorded a near career best score of 96 off the beater, for a nett score of 72 – to be awarded the October monthly medal.

He didn’t have it all his own way, however, and had to survive a four-way countback with Ross Hastings (10), Dale Smith (14), Anthony Carroll (19) and Roger Walker (20), who all finished with the same score.

Slater will now go into the final for the medal of medallists, which will be played between all the 2021-22 monthly medal winners on the first Saturday in July 2023.

For their efforts, Hastings was declared the Division 1 winner over Smith, while Carroll had to settle for the runner’s-up prize in Division 2, with the winner being a visitor from Broadford in Evan King (15) who also finished with a nett score of 72.

Walker also had to settle for the runner’s-up prize in Division 3, because the best score of the day was recorded in this division by a visitor from the Latrobe Golf Club in Francesco Cianci (33) with a 69 nett.

Other players with a nett score of 74 went into the ball rundown – while Neville Brady had two very good shots into holes 11 and 15 to take away the nearest the pins, with Ross Hastings and Anthony Carroll following suit on holes 2 and 5.

Thursday of last week saw a stableford competition being played across three divisions, where by the best score of the day was recorded by a member from the Barham Golf Club in Wayne Wisby (12) with 39 points.

Wisby took out Division 1 from Dale Smith (14) on 36 points, while Division 2 was decided by the countback system when both Barry Lacey (16) and Rod Prockter (17) came in with scores of 38 points – with Lacey coming out on top.

In Division 3, Tony McDonald (32) was the best with 38 points ahead of Rick Austerberry (24) on 36 points.

Barry Lacey shot a hole-in-one on the 11th to claim the NTP, but had to share the jackpot on offer with Jorgen Leschke and Doug Grant, as they also hit it within the magical one-meter distance.

The other NTP’s went to Dale Smith on the 2nd, Jackson Quirk on the 5th and Gene Brooks on the 15th.

In the ball rundown, scores of 33 points and better were required to get a ball.

Sunday’s event was a three person Ambrose, playing in 6s event, sponsored by Andy Graham’s, AGrade Sheds Company, with a field of 110 players taking part.

These Ambrose events are proving to be very popular no matter what the format is – based on the number of players taking part.

The winners with a gross score of 61, equating to a nett score of 54.83, was the team of Lucas, Ashley and Dallas Free and they were closely followed by Stuart McLean, Matthew Collins and Luke Merritt with a score of nett 57.33.

Mark Grant, who teamed up with two visitors from Wagga Wagga in Thomas Hull and Joshua Grieg finished with nett 57.83.

Nett 59 was the magical number required in the ball rundown, with some on this score missing out, whilst the nearest the pins went to Brian White on the 2nd, Wayne Such on the 5th, Ashley Free on the 11th and Lisa Jean on the 15th.

Tuesday’s stableford competition saw Mark Warren (12) record the best score with 39 points, ahead of Shane Kelly (22) on 38 points.

Warren topped off a good day by claiming the nearest the pin on hole 11, while Dale Smith did likewise on hole 15.

The ball rundown went down to scores of 35 or more.
