The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

A very successful RTM Construction Day was held at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club last Sunday.

With a near capacity field of 124 players taking part in the four-person Ambrose, shotgun start event, it was the combination of Joel Travaglia (26), Malcolm Deveraux (36), Gary Blencowe (11) and Rick Pickering (18), playing from their adjusted daily handicap of 11.38, who took out the day.

Their net total score of 54.62 was ahead of the team of Luke Merritt, Greg Walker, Ryan Merritt and Murray Conn (10.63), who finished with 55.37.

They were closely followed in third position, with a score of 55.5, by Craig Fletcher, Dave Hogan, Dale Jager and Brad Kelly.

John Tripodi had a very good shot, getting his ball to 89cm on the second hole, to claim that nearest the pin, while Brenton Cruickshank and Janette Tucker were the closest on the fifth hole, Patrick Blandford also got very close (66cm) on the 11th for the men and Claris Bourne for the women, while Brenten Hogan claimed the one on the 15th.

Scores of 57.37 and less were required to eligible in the ball rundown.

Saturday’s competition was a Stableford event that was played in three divisions.

The best score of the day came out of Division 3, where Glenn Wilkes had a great day out by scoring 42 points from his 21 handicap. Runner-up in this division was Paul Sparks (23) with 38 points.

Leigh Paynter (19) was the best in Division 2 with 40 points and was followed by Dale Rogers (15) on 38 points.

Division 1 was taken out by Fred Fletcher (13), who had to dig deep after just making the red tee markers on the first hole, coming out on top with 37 points, ahead of Gene Brooks (9) with 36 points. 35 points and more were required to get a ball.

Nearest the pins went to Lachlan Carroll on the second, Cayle McLean on the fifth, Tyler Aitken was closest on the 11th and had to share the jackpot with Malcolm Seton-Stewart and Kerry Gammon, who also hit it to within a metre, while Chris Merritt was closest on the 15th.

On Thursday last week, the daily competition was against par, with the countback system getting a workover to separate the top two in each division.

Division 1 went to Craig Fletcher (13) with 2 up, ahead of Brent Daniels (13), while in Division 2, it was Joe Morrison (23) who come out on top with 1 down, ahead of David McFarland (22). 2 down was the score required to be the ball run-down, while with the nearest the pins went to Graham McLelland on the second, Dale Rogers claimed both the fifth and the 11th, which also included the jackpot, hitting to 64cm and Darryl Domaille was closest on the 15th.

Tuesday’s Stableford competition was restricted to playing the front nine holes because the back nine was closed for maintenance and was taken out by Tony McDonald (26) with 21 points, who was closely followed by Hugh Thompson (23) with 20, Val Hedwards (16) with 18 and Gary Hughes (22) on 17 points. Andrew Ferguson claimed the nearest the pin on the fifth hole.

In the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens 9-hole summer competition – now with only two weeks to go in this current series – it is team Cadd Magic, with Barb Cadd, Carol Wiseman, Claris Bourne and David Bourne on 343, slightly extending their lead from the previous week ahead of the Golden Oldies in Bev and Rob West and Maz and Joe Morrison on 340. They are followed by the Pigeons, with Ryan Deveraux, Dan Lavey, Zac Denham and Sean White all on 331, with the Currawong Courters a further six points adrift.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

The last day of spring brought forth excellent conditions for scoring in the Stableford event at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.

Twenty-three marker Suzanne McClellan especially enjoyed the benign conditions, registering a score of 40 points to win Division 1, with 25 of these points being scored on the front nine. Runner-up in this division was Noni Domaille (20) on 38 points.

Jenice Krahnert (30) and Jo Williams (41) both scored 38 points to win Division’s 2 and 3 respectively, with the runner’s-up vouchers going to Jenny Lynas (29) and Jill Brown (35) who both scored 37 points.

Shelley Wilkins with 37 points and Jude Simmonds, Diane Nalder, Di Martin, Ruth McAlister and Maralyn Morrison all with 36 points led the ball pool – while Kathy Parkinson was closest to the flag on both the 11th and 15th, with Clare Nalder-Martin and Mag Kiley the most accurate on the 2nd and 5th taking out the nearest the pins

Thirty-three women ventured out on Saturday, with Ruth McAlister (28) on 40 points leading the score board, ahead of junior Tara Free (39) on 38 points. Sue Davis and Kerry Gammon were the nearest the pin winners, while Laurel Dewhurst on 38 points led the ball pool.

The golf Christmas festivities will get under way next Wednesday with an Ambrose event on the Downs course. Lunch will be provided and any members who are unable to compete but would like to join in the after party are asked to contact Mag Kiley
