The 19th hole

Murray Downs Men

THE father and son combination of Ash and Lucas Free eclipsed the field in last Sunday’s medley 4BBB Stableford competition, with a great score of 53 points – of which son Lucas claims that he scored 47 of them.

The Frees required every point they could muster, as the runner-up pairing of father and daughter Andrew and Sadie Spitty also had an equally impressive score of 51 points to take off the minor prize on offer.

Coming in third with a mere 48 points was the pairing of Sean White and Daniel Lavey, followed by the rest of the field, who required at least 44 points to be eligible for a ball.

The nearest the pins went to Janette Tucker on the 2nd, Ash Free on the 5th, Steve Emberson on the 11th and Dion Carmichael on the 15th.

Each of the three divisions in Saturday’s Stableford competition was taken out by visitors to Murray Downs, who obviously found the course to their liking.

Neangur Park visitor Kris Hazeldene (8) took out Division 1 with 40 points from Andrew Gilchrist (11) on 39 points.

George Walker (16) from Edenhope was the best in Division 2 with 36 points, just ahead of Tyrone Parkinson (17) with 35 points.

In Division 3, the best score of the day was handed in by Tim McIntyre (24) from Horsham, of 43 points, from Neil Bailey (23) on 41 points.

Dennis Kelly (21) recorded one of his best scores for a long time of 38 points to lead the ball rundown, which went down to scores of 34 points.

Kris Hazeldene topped off a good day by claiming the NTP on the 2nd, Craig Mathieson hit it very close (143cm) on the 5th, Bobby Kelly just missed out on the jackpot on the 11th (128 cm) and John Webb was the closest on the 15th.

Tuesday’s event was also the 4BBB Stableford competition, which was taken out by Daniel Cruickshank and Leighton Dullard with 45 points, from Corey Daniels and Daniel Cruickshank, who acted as the swinger, followed by James McLean and Craig Fletcher, and Gary Hughes and Les McPhee, all on the same score of 43 points. Joey Higgins claimed the NTP on 2nd hole.

Last Thursday’s competition was against par, where Ron Munro (16) recorded the day’s best score of three up to take out Division 1 from Ray Power (12), who finished at one up.

Greg Weybury (23) was the best in Division 2 with two up from Geoff McDonald (37) on one up.

Other players required at least one down and better to get a ball, whilst the NTPs went to Ross Hastings, Ray Power, Paul Raudino and Wayne Such on holes 2, 5, 11 and 15, respectively.

Murray Downs Women

Christmas preparations and holidays reduced the number of competitors at MDG&CC on Wednesday.

Of the 41 competitors, Maryann Mathiske was the star of the day with an impressive 40 pts from her 35 handicap. Runner-up in Division 2 was Lois Coady (38) 35 points.

In Division 1, Lisa Brady’s (27) 37 points were successful ahead of Ruth McAlister’s (27) 35 points.

Ball winners were Pam Austerberry and Jill McIndoe, both 35, Eilleen Willox and Jill Bath, both 34 and Sally Fearn and Virginia Allen, both 33 points.

Pam Austerberry collected two NTP prizes, with the others going to Lyn Merrett and Paula Pickert.

On Saturday, Avis Shipsides matched her 36 handicap to her number of points to win from Dione Heppell (11) 35 points.

Ruth McAlister, Kristy Gordon, Suzanne McLellan and Antionette Kilderry all scored 34 points to lead the ball pool and Dione Heppell and Shelley Wilkins were the nearest the pin winners on the 2nd and 11th.
